I planted two of these and this one has done really well this year, the other one looks terrible. I don't know if I need to grow it in a more sheltered area or if it's just in a bad spot in my yard?

I agree it looks delicate but it is surprisingly tough. It will survive down to at least -15F and the branches are pretty strong. I found out today that deer have been sampling a number of my plants lately and that was part of the problem of the other one I have. The bark exfoliates as it ages and it is really beautiful, it's one of those trees that looks good in every season.

Oh yeah, sorry I should have caught that haha. Have you ever seen a mature Stewartia? The fall color, bark and branching are all impressive on older trees.

Just looked it up - what a stunning tree! Really beautiful. The bark reminds me of those Australian trees?

Yes sorry I realised that was silly after I posted it! Possibly eucalyptus?? It's just what they are sometimes referred to as here.
