Pachypodium lamerei - Madagascar Palm At Morton's Desert Botanical Garden

I'm standing in front of the tallest Madagascar Palm I've ever seen in my life. It's just over 30ft/10m tall according to the owner at Morton Botanical Garden in Palm Springs, CA. It was planted in 1992 and was only around 15ft/4.6m tall then. Photo taken Aug. 20, 2011.

In Palm Springs they grow this big, not in San Diego! lol! :>)
I've seen them 15ft/4.6m tall here in San Diego...it takes a long time for them to get this big, though.

That's unusual to get that tall without branching or a swollen trunk. BUT,i know there are MANY clones of this species out there..some keep the juvenile foliage,some bloom much younger then others,some have near black leaves in winters cool weather. I have one like that. But,I've kept a few and can tell you this is one variable plant.

This is the largest Pachypodium lameri I've ever seen. It was so tall the photo couldn't capture the real tallness of the plant.
There's a lot of species and hybrids for sale. I like the varieties with the larger leaves.
