Our 'Poltergeist' tree!

This is a tree in our garden that looks very old and has been chopped extensively by the previous owners. My husband says it looks like the tree out of the film "Poltergeist"! Apparently it is an apple tree but the leaves are very small and the whole tree is very sickly and looks like it is struggling for life. (Mind you, with a massive clump of bamboo next to it it's hardly surprising! Any suggestions of the best way to get rid of bamboo?) I would like to cut the tree down to about waist height and then create a bird table using slices of the tree linked together to make a table top. What do you think?
