Palm border

Palm border (Trachycarpus fortunei (Chusan palm))

This border used to be the same as the rest of the garden - acers, conifers and azaleas. But it was a bit boring! We saw this palm three years ago last October and decided we must be able to fit it in somewhere. The jungle just grew and grew (see blog 10) and bamboos, bananas and more palms have given it a really tropical feel.

Your garden is great. Can't believe you live in the UK as it looks so tropical. I have a trachycarpus palm and some bamboos but they're spread about a bit and not together like yours. It looks lovely! Which bananas do you have? I planted a musa basjoo last year but the snow and frost killed it completely. I won't let it put me off though and will get another small one as soon as they appear in the garden centre again.

Hi Aitchw

We grow musa basjoo bananas. We had quite a large clump planted in the ground, which we protected with fleece and a final wrapping of brown weed suppressant material so that it wasn't too much of an eyesore.

This winter, for the first time, all the top growth keeled over in late March. We are now relieved to see new shoots emerging.

If yours is in the ground, then don't give up hope yet!!
