Pachypodium lamieri - Madagascar Palm

Pachypodium lamieri - Madagascar Palm (Pachypodium lamieri - Madagascar Palm)

Madagascar Palm is not a true palm. It's a tree-like succulent...which can grow to 15+/ 4.5+ meters tall here in the ground. It has beautiful white flowers which resembles Plumeria's flowers and is in the same family (Apocynaceae). Photo taken May 27, 2010 in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA.

Mushybanna, it's the reason for the common name. Unfortunately, this plant will never be a Royal palm. LOL! : > )

Meanie,

Well, the Mexican boarder is only 15 miles away.

Grandmage, it was a warm day...however, our temps have been running 5 - 10 degrees below normal the last couple of months. We San Diegans have been complaining a lot about the cooler than normal weather.

Aleyna:

It's a very commonly grown succulent here in Southern California.
Do they grow where you live?

Delonix,
I'm not sure if I've seen this kind of plant here.

Aleyna:

It's possible it may be too wet where you live for these plants to grow well.

Madagascar palms are native to the dry topical areas of Madagascar.

I have one in ground for years..over 4'. Another, potted and kept outside is over 4' and with Plumeria sized- actually bigger then Plumeria leaves. Just waiting for flowers..some day.

This shrub typically blooms in late summer and fall; however, this year many bloomed very early in spring because of the very hot weather this past winter.
