Filling containers - finally!

Today was the day I could no longer resist the temptation to buy summer bedding! (I have to admit I did buy three trays of rather nice and well-priced pelargoniums from Asda last week) I went to a local nursery and was like a child in a sweetshop. I wanted to take some photos, but thought it was a bit cheeky, so you’ll have to use your imaginations! I bought dark blue petunias (because I love the scent) and nicotiana for the same reason; some New Guinea busy lizzies – they are not growing any impatiens this year because they lost the lot last season (the assistant said it looked as if someone had come in overnight and sprayed them with weedkiller. I know other places are selling them, but mine were also a disaster last year, so I’ll take a break); some non-stop begonias; begonia sempiflorens, with green leaves and bronze leaves; trailing lobelia – mixed colours; and for baskets, brachycomb, bacopa and glechoma variegata. Oh, and some cineraria. I have prepared the pots and planted up some of them, but not the baskets yet. That’s tomorrow’s job, I hope.

They had some beautiful violas – one of my weaknesses! – but I felt I really had enough in my borders so I resisted them. Now – of course – I remember that I want some for the pots at the front door, so I have the perfect excuse to return tomorrow! (I did tell the assistant she’d be seeing me again!) And I was thinking of getting some chrysanths, and perhaps I could do with some more New Guineas…

Today’s booty:

Then, after the planting, there’s the wonderful sense of achievement!

It’s almost dark now, and as I look out of the window, I can see one little white begonia flower winking up at me.

Wow a lot of plants there, you've got a lot to do tomorrow. Is that sun shining down on them?
You've just solved a riddle i was having with myself about my impatiens all failing this year apart from one. I wasn't sure if it was just too cold or overwatered or the compost i was using.
Enjoy potting up your baskets and hopefully you will post some pictures when they are done.

Yes, Bill (nice pun!) it has been beautiful here today, if rather breezy and fairly cool.

I only found out about the busy lizzies recently - apparently they have failed wholesale due to a fungal infection, and many nurseries are not growing them this year. I thought they were being eaten last year - all the leaves fell off and they just rotted away. I kept moving them, and even bought another batch, to no avail. I believe Tesco is selling them, but I'm not having them this year!

The sleeves will be rolled up tomorrow! I shall certainly post pictures of the final results!

You've quite a collection there. Let's hope it stays a bit milder so they can stay outside eh?

Hope so, Sheilar, although it's pretty mild here compared with a lot of places. Large fleece blanket in use at the moment!

Through the office window at work today, it looked like a warm sunny day, but outside it was freezing!! lol

Yes - it definitely looks a lot warmer than it feels! Here it was the breeze that was really cooling it down. In the sheltered spots it was quite warm. Oh for March weather!!!

A certain online website is still selling them, I bought some Melchisedec and all apart from one have lost the leaves and rotted. Maybe i should contact them and ask for my money back.
I got sunburnt on my head today Sheilar, even though it was fairly cold, it did say on the weather that the sun is strong though at this time of the year.

Isn't it exciting :o)
I've bought some Buzy Lizzies from Tesco. I don't know how they'll do, but we'll see.

Mel you do have a nice collection there and love your excuse need to go back to nursery.

I was at our on Monday then yesterday drove back and its not on my doorstep an hours drive.

A wee bit longer when cars coming towards you and you cant overtake for a a guy driving slow.

Very slow indeed what I would call a Sunday afternoon driver out for run and admiring the view so to speak:)

Enjoy your planting.

I would not touch Tesco for plants like to support our nursery and local garden centres.

Good luck with your purchases, Mel.
You've bought a wonderful selection ! :o)

You are going to be busy, thats a lot of planting to be done, all we need is some sunshine with warmth to get a good show of flowers so we can sit and admire outside instead of through the windows...

Wonderful collection of plants, you must have had a car full! I'm hoping to get my bedding plants potted up next week :)

I'm just wondering where you live that its warm enough to risk leaving summer bedding out all night without covering it... mine's on the balcony, under glass overnight, even now, this late in the year. I'm sick to death of moving the blasted dahlias in the house and out again...

Thank you everyone for your comments. I am updating my container blog so you can see how I have got on.

We have a huge and vast Tesco here, Scotcat - I don't like going there for anything, never mind plants!!!

I am really sorry to hear about your busies, Bill, I think that's such a disappointment. I was almost beginning to think I might be over-reacting. Best of luck with yours, Hywel.

I am right on the coast in W. Lancs, Bamboo. The area just outside the house at the back is pretty well protected, though I have been covering the most vulnerable plants. Our window cleaners always used to sit at our outside table to have their sandwiches because they said it was the warmest spot on their round. I have been sitting having a cup of coffee ouside for a couple of weeks, though I have been wearing a fleece more than once. My mother lives just two miles inland and often has a frost when we don't. Until a few years ago, we had virtually frost-free winters. Mind you, I wouldn't like to bet on the weather at any time of year now.

Ah, well being close to the coast usually means warmer temperatures, particularly in winter.

Yes, Bamboo - and I'm just far enough away from the front to miss any of the disadvantages. I do hope it settles down soon though - I can tell from various comments on the site that the weather is causing real problems. It's actually rather dry in my garden, and one of my water butts is nearly empty (the one in the back, of course, because it's the one I've been using) We've had rain, but mostly drizzle or a couple of short showers. A good downpour - at night of course! - would be good.

Glad you like the selection, Terra and Craftyemma. I hope all your plans come to fruition! I quite miss the busy lizzies though - I always popped them in any gaps and they always did the job - until last year, that is! I WAS busy, Lincslass - see the next blog! But the feeling of achievement can't be beaten!
