It'll be a night of taking it in turns sitting with him, i expect.

My lab has fits too, started suddenly when he was around 3 years old, always used to be in the hot weather and the middle of the night, being controlled by medication now, know how distressing it is to see, poor Barbara and Henry.

21 Jun, 2010

Poor Barbara - and poor Henry! I hope the vet can find a cause and treat it as soon as possible. They must both be worried sick!

22 Jun, 2010

Thank you Louise, can you keep us updated as to how they are doing? Both my 'girls' had fits, but seem to recover well from them, so I pray Henry does the same. This is upsetting news for all of us who know Spritz, OH and Henry, please pass on my thoughts to them x

23 Jun, 2010

maybe its the heat we have been having flori, i know casper hasnt wanted to be out long, to much for them ;o(

23 Jun, 2010

It could be,San, as even Raff, who loves the sun, tends to stay indoors keeping cool on days such as this. Hope you are keeping well x

23 Jun, 2010

my setter had them intermittently and recovered each time ( she didn't lose conciousness , I'd give her a chew to hold in her teeth) she lived to 13 1/2 ,
so hopefully Henry will soon be better , I do agree that the heat suited neither of my dogs, not eating etc.
Kate the setter loved water and this weather we had to watch her or she'd go for a soak in the small pond !

I wondered if anyone would mind me giving some advice about dogs fitting which I got from my uncle Bob. (A breeder of G. shepherds all of his working life!)

1) No matter who bad it looks, the dog doesn't feel anything as it is unconscious.

2) Keep the room darker than normal both during the fit and as he starts to recover

3) If it is safe to, then cuddle your bog and/or stroke it until it recovers, talking in a calm quiet voice. Avoid any stimulation, stress or anything else that is likely to upset him as he will not know what has happened.

4) Dogs can NOT swallow their tongues, do not try to put your hands anywhere near his mouth. YOU RISK BEING SEVERELY BITTEN! ! !

5) If at all possible, place a pillow, cushion or folded blanket under his head.

6) Make sure someone stays with him until he has recovered.

7) If he has not recovered or goes into another fit within 10 to 15 minutes then ring the vets immediately!

It is very likely he will make a mess and he will probably be quite upset about this when he recovers. Reassure him that it's OK and he's not in any trouble.
Personally I would stay with the dog for a few hours afterwards to make sure he doesn't have another fit.

I'm sure this isn't an exhaustive list but it is what my uncle Bob told me he would do and lets face it he has earned a living from caring for and breeding gorgeous dogs all of his life.

its exactly the same for humans to ian, never to put anything in mouth cause you could get fingers bitten off, my ex had epalepsy and i had to do exactly the same as with an animal, also dogs can have the same medication as humans for the condition to, our old dog was on same medication as my ex,

23 Jun, 2010

Ian, that is some fantastic advice, thank you so much! Fits can be so frightenind and distressing to witness, and I have been there many many times in the past, I can't help but feel this will help any others who have to go through this with their beloved pet. Bless you for your thoughtfulness of adding your comment to this blog.
Thanks San x

23 Jun, 2010

its very frightening flori when i first saw it happen i was in panic mode, but when its every day life you get use to it, but not a nice thing for anyone to have to witness or go through x

23 Jun, 2010

First time it happened i was terrified, but as you said, you learn to deal with it~just wonder what causes a dog to fit though in the first place, apart from an illness?

23 Jun, 2010

they are just like us flori, have illness just like us, can be born with it, or can get it with age, or can be caused after having other illness, its just one of them things in life i guess, or even over heating can cause a convusion,,, sorry about bad spelling there lol

23 Jun, 2010

At least a human can let you know what's wrong, so much harder when you have to secong guess your pet all the time. Hope Henry doing ok.....

23 Jun, 2010

thats true flori,, i just use to be there for my dog, stroke her gentle and keep her calm, could tell she was enbarrsed cause her bladder would fail and her little face,, poor thing, i hope henry is fine to, such a lovely doggy ;o))

23 Jun, 2010

Have got to go and put in some study time now, I only popped on here to catch up and say hello, and that was at 11.30 this morning! Catch up with you all soon. x

23 Jun, 2010

agree with all that has been said , I think if we can remain calm then the dog will, but the first one or two--- until you understand what is happening --- its frightening for all concerned , hope Spritz can read Ian's good advice

23 Jun, 2010

naughty flori lol, cya later x

23 Jun, 2010

I've only just now seen this blog/news about poor Henry. I do hope he has recovered & has had no more fits.

I can quite understand how frightening it must have been for Barbara as one of our little dogs had a fit one day, it frightened the life out of me! He suddenly screamed & arched his head back till his ears were almost touching his tail!

We took him immediately to the vets but by the time we got there he had made a complete recovery. The vet told us he had probably had a fit, he also said he may have had many more before but that we had never noticed. He had been on treatment for several years for Cushings Syndrome ( a type of mental illness not unlike human mental illnesses). We had been told he had an inoperable tumour on the brain. Even so he lived for several years after being diagnosed.

23 Jun, 2010

Hallo everyone. I've been so grateful for all your messages and sympathy, and to Louise for telling you about my lovely boy.

I'm sure you understand why I haven't been on GoY this last week.

Unfortunately, although the range of tests carried out at the Vetinary hospital on Monday showed no sign of any underlying problems, and Henry had seemed to be recovering well, he had another seizure during the night. - although it must have been a minor one, as it didn't wake me up.

Back to square 1, I'm afraid. Please think of us...I know you all will.

25 Jun, 2010

Barbara, ive only just read about Henry this morning :-(.
you will all be in my thoughts and i hope Henry makes a speedy recovery xx

25 Jun, 2010

25 Jun, 2010

hi barbara im so glad henry doesnt have any problems, it must be a real worry for you and hubby, maybe its the heat barbara, it can be to much for labs, it was for mine when i had her, she would be fine for ages then have a few at once, vet put her on epalepcy tabs and worked wonders, take care and lots of hugs for henry to ;o)) xx

25 Jun, 2010

Thanks for letting us all know, about Henry,Spritz, and glad to know he has no serious problems. It could be the heat,as some have suggested. He will be having the best possible care with you,so do hope he improves quickly, and back to his normal lovely self....:o))

25 Jun, 2010

Glad Henry has no serious problems Barbara, could be the heat Sanbaz my chocy lab used to have one or two every year and always in the middle of the night in summer, did start getting them much more frequently recently he's 10 now and just been put on epiphen and bromide, took a while to get the dose right, but seem to be working and no fits for three months now, so sure the vet will be able to control them for him Barbara, hope Henrys back to his old self soon and getting in on all your lovely photos xx

26 Jun, 2010

If he has any more, we're going to insist that he's referred to Bristol for a scan - if it 'is' a brain tumour, the sooner we know, the quicker it can be dealt with. If it's epilepsy, then he's going to need medication, as people have said. What I can't do is sit and wait until the next seizure...and the next...without knowing WHY it's happening! He looks and acts so well during the day...but the fits are just terrifying and distressing.

26 Jun, 2010

It must be a really distressing time for both yourself and Henry. Hope you get some answers soon Spritz...xx

26 Jun, 2010

Good on you Spritz. Henry needs the best treatment as soon as possible and today's ideas of wait and see just aren't good enough. Keep at them until you get what's right for Henry.

26 Jun, 2010

I will indeed, Ian. It would be great if he didn't have any more seizures, but we have to be ready for them, I'm afraid.

26 Jun, 2010

Just to let youknow that we are thinking of you and the boy down in Bridgend.

Hope all turns out well for both of you.....chin up:o))

27 Jun, 2010

Thanks, Ob. :-)

27 Jun, 2010

27 Jun, 2010

I have just read about Henrys troubles Spritz. I'm glad you have your husband there for mutual support for you and Henry. Do get as much rest as possible and try not to worry too much. Henry knows you love him and will be confidant that you will be with him when it is necessary.

28 Jun, 2010

still praying that Henry makes a quick recovery, are there an more updates?make sure you and hubby look after yourselves as well. xx

28 Jun, 2010

Nothing more - I know it sounds awful, and it is of course, but we have to wait until he has another one... then we're going to insist that he gets referred for a
scan.

Thanks, Scotsgran - it really helps that GOY-ers are being so supportive. :-))

28 Jun, 2010

We are all here for you Spritz, and only a 'click' away on your keyboard~please keep us updated my dear friend, and let's hope this gets sorted asap! xxx

29 Jun, 2010

I will, Flori. I do know what a help you've all been, and are being! I'm trying to be less stressed about it, but it's difficult... xxx

30 Jun, 2010

Did you get Henry as a puppy and how old is he now? Have you always kept Labs or is he your first dog. I hope you have all had a good day.

30 Jun, 2010

Hope things are looking better today for you Spritzhenry take care .....Mavis.x

1 Jul, 2010

Hallo Scotsgran - yes, we chose each other when he was 8 weeks old and still with his brothers and sisters. He'll be 6 in October. Because I had a full-time job, I wasn't able to have a dog before I retired, so he's our first ever dog!

Thank you, and Mavis, for your kind messages. We've got over the initial shock of his seizures, and although we're obviously taking special care of him in the hot weather, we're trying hard to stay calm and positive. Not easy, though!

1 Jul, 2010

I have sent you a couple of pm's which you might find helpful. Take care.

1 Jul, 2010

Thanks. I've PM'd you back.....:-)

1 Jul, 2010

So saddened to hear henry is poorly Spritz....I am thinking and praying for you both...xxxx

3 Jul, 2010

I haven't been on GOY for a few weeks and only just seen this blog. So sorry to hear about Henry - you must be so worried about him. He is the most gorgeous, best-natured dog I have ever met. Everything is crossed that you find out what is causing his seizures and that he can be treated. Thinking about you all. Take care xxxxx

4 Jul, 2010

Thank you both - we're hoping to get further tests carried out ASAP so that appropriate treatment can begin. xx
