If you don't ask, you don't get !

I wrote a blog recently, saying how disappointed I was that my favourite Fuchsia nursery seems to have closed,
and I was looking for another one where I could get some unusual varieties, and also replacements for ones I’ve lost, … and I found one.

Unfortunately however, they don’t do mail order. You have to go there in person to buy the plants,
but it’s a very long way from here, so I won’t be able to go.

Well, I decided to write to them and tell them how disappointed I was to see all those lovely Fuchsias that I can’t buy, and I sent them a message on their ‘contact us’ page.

What do you think ? They wrote back and said they’d make an exception in my case ! LOL :D
and asked me where I lived and which ones I wanted.

I looked through their web site and after limiting myself to 10 (which was difficult !) I thanked them for their kind email and told them which ones I’d like.

I had a reply today, saying they’d be happy to send them to me in April :) :) :)

If you don’t ask you don’t get ! :o)

Wow, well done Hywel, and well done that supplier! Just out of interest what are they charging you?

You did the right thing to ask,Hywel, and firms like this are to be commended for their customer service,so well done, whoever they are..Another good reason to look forward to Spring ! :o) x

Glad you got lucky, Hywel. Look forward to seeing them one day, when they are much bigger!

Now Hywel, somewhere in your sub -conscience is my old post where I advised people to go to the TOP; to request help; to complain. You see it works!

Seriously, as Hywel pointed out, if you don't ask.......

Good for you and good for the supplier.

It was well worth asking and who knows they may rethink and start sending out plants through mail order in the future.

That's great news Hywel, very pleased for you.

19 Jan, 2018

Wow - big difference from £4!

Thanks for your comments.

You're probably right Eirlys :)

Most places have become very expensive now Sue. I've found one more nursery where they're £1.50 but other places are more. Needless to say I won't be sending for any from them.

yes but where is this place as it may be closer to me so I can visit.

19 Jan, 2018

It's near London.

Excellent Hywel, how good is that! I agree, best to speak up, nothing to lose :-)

19 Jan, 2018

that's not close enough for me to visit sadly.

Thanks Dawn :)

I suppose it's even further from you than it is from me Seaburngirl !

That's great to hear, Hywel! We now look forward to seeing some photos of your plants in the summer & how they get on for you! ??

19 Jan, 2018

I'll show them when they arrive and how they do :)

Good for you Hywel on not giving up and on the supplier for making the exception for you, proves they listened to what you were saying and that it wasn't possible for you to collect, look forward to seeing them...

Well done Hywel. I too was checking the internet to see if I could find you a supplier. You beat me to it but I did come across this very interesting website http://www.solentfuchsia.co.uk/old_nursery.html
It starts with the dream of a young man who wants to be a missionary in Papua New Guinea. It tells how fuchsias played their part in him achieving his goal and how they survived the war. It is an uplifting read for people other than just fuchsia fans. I am sure the young man would applaud the nursery you have found and their efforts on your behalf.

Hywel I am pleased to read you have managed to track down some new plants for your wonderful collection, I hope they do well for you, and will look out for the photographs, and as you say don't ask don't get!!

Thanks for all your comments ...

Thanks for the link Scotsgran. It was interesting to read it :)

Stera and Hywel I'm glad you enjoyed the information. I love to know the stories behind our plants and I found this one had appeal from a very different angle.

Thanks from me also Scotsgran! I've just spent an agreeable 3/4h reading through many of the sections. ?

here is another link which has much more of the history of the Fuchsia. http://www.fuchsiasinthecity.com/about-fuchsias/dictionary/dictionary.html
Here is one interesting fact from that website. When Queen Mary visited her friend Lady Boothby at her home, Fonmon Castle in Glamorgan in Wales, she was disappointed to find that a meeting of a local group, F.U.C.H.S.I.A. was for a political group. She thought there should be a Fuchsia Society with Lady B. as its first President. Lady B did become its first President when she and a small circle of enthusiasts set it up. A cultivar hybridised from F. alpestris x Royal Purple by the Welsh curator and botanist Charles Percival Raffill in 1938 was named in her honour by him during a visit by Lady B. and the British Fuchsia Society in 1939.

Interesting. I've got a variety called Lady Boothby.
I'll have a look at the links later on :) Thanks

I've also got a couple of plants of 'Lady Boothby' growing on the balcony. A cutting from last year reached over 6ft this year but the original plant, which I still have, has never got above 3ft!
