28th February...what a day..

There was a fine coating of snow all over the grass when dawn broke this morning but by 10am there was stop start blizzard conditions. Soon the snow was 4inches deep. Thankfully we didn’t have any reason to go out and so we spent the whole day popping in and out of the conservatory watching the birds visiting the feeders. These are some of the ones we’ve spotted today..
We think these are Fieldfares…

We think this is a Siskin, there were about half a dozen of these..

Since we changed the seeds to sunflower hearts we have counted up to 18 of these Goldfinches arriving all at once with a couple of Greenfinches mixed in with them.

Several Chaffinch have joined them…but only feed on the ground…

…along with four blackbirds, several pigeons, several Starlings, a red wing, 3-4 Blue tits, 2 doves, a magpie, two Robins, 2 male Pheasants with four females, and several Sparrows.

They are emptying the feeders daily and its been a real treat to see so many different birds visiting.

Poor birds. Nice that you are feeding them.
We haven't got any snow here but it's very cold and the wind is strong.

We have only had fieldfare once in the 18 years we have been here..never had a siskin.....lovely to see so many visiting, the birds need a lot of feeding in this weather otherwise they can die in this kind of weather.....great pics btw HB......

Aaaaaaw, how lovely! Thank you for sharing this. The birds here are all in hiding because the wind is so strong. I did see three sparrows today and a Blackbird took up residence on the edge of the plate with the food on it...in the shelter of a tree Ivy. But that's all covered with snow now. I shall go out tomorrow am and dig it out if I can find it.

Remember 2010 when the Waxwings started coming in from Scandinavia? I hope they come again, their singing was incredible...like electric noises but so delicate.

And a Partridge in a Pear tree! Lol

The last but one with the red underwings is a redwing.
the first ones are fieldfares.

I also think that is a siskin, lovely birds visiting you.

Love the Redwings....haven't seen one for years now.

Me neither Karen!

Homebird what a great collection! Our only unusual one today was a snipe - goodness knows where that came from. We seem to have three robins, so I guess there may be a fight in due course...

They look pretty thankful you are feeding them.

How lovely. We had lots of field fare zooming around in groups in the blizzard like snow, I’ve not seen them since the awful 2010 winter, they love cut up apple on the ground, I’m going to put some out now.

Thanks for that Dawn I will go and chop some up now as they are in the garden flying too and fro already. We have never had Fieldfares in our garden before.
I've never seen a Snipe, Stera, this weather is bringing in so many birds, it's a pleasure to see them.
We have never seen a redwing before either Karen. Similar in size and shape to the Fieldfares, we thought that was what it was until we checked in the bird book.
Siris...lol. Wouldn't that top it off.
We had a Heron standing on the trellis looking into the pond a few days ago. We watched him for ages. Daren't move, waiting to see if the fishing wire we have stretched across the pond would deter it. Luckily it does.

Lovely blog ... well done for looking after these gorgeous little birds.

Lovely blog and photos.

Thanks everyone. The Redwing is eating the Sarcococa berries. It's the only bird that's ever eaten them.

We too spend time in our conservatory watching the birds Homebird. Thanks for showing all of yours and must say have not seen fieldfares before !

Did they enjoy the apple Homeb? Once mine found them on the lawn, they soon scoffed them, falling out over them too

Thanks Rose. I think it's this really cold weather that has brought us so many diferent birds this week.
Yes Dawn they really do like them, it didn't take long at all for them to clear the apple I had chopped up. They are bullying the blackbirds now though, shooing them off the lawn. I've had to put a plate of seed, grapes and apple (didn't realise blackbirds liked apple too) on the patio table near the kitchen window so the blackbirds can feed in peace. ?

Our blackbirds are really agressive to other birds. There are two males vying for nesting territory, not enough area to accommodate two. One even flys at me and stands his ground when I get close, until he realises how large I am.

We don't buy feed, we make up our own from grated old cheese brown bread crumbs, oats, apple dried fruit, blackbirds love sultanas! seeds and nuts we have always got bits and bobs leftover from baking....the robins seem to eat the most of it..
HB we had some Fieldfare and some Lapwings fly over yesterday, off to the IOW so I gather....

The blackbirds in our garden were vying for teritory before the snow and Fieldfares turned up. Now the Fieldfares are becoming aggressive with each other as well as the blackbirds.
I cut sultanas up for the blackbirds Dd when I haven't any grapes left. When they are feeding their young they sit on the doorstep or window sill looking in, waiting for me to cut up grapes etc to put out on the patio. :o)

Amazing birds aren't they? such a treat to have them visit our gardens...

I haven’t seen much of the small birds, even now it’s thawed and warmer, I’ve put meal worms out in the usual places but no interest.
