Winter 'Blues'

It’s been dry for so long now, It’s a very long time since I’ve woken up to heavy rain here in Cheshire. Fortunately we need a new TV so we’re off to the shops, never thought I’d be glad to go shopping for something to do. It’s about this time each year that I feel sad and wonder what on earth I’m going to do until Spring. I normally spend so much time in the garden so there’s so much time to fill. Sadly I’m not a reader and dislike TV though I’m an avid Radio 4 listener. During the summer I make lists of ‘things to do in winter’ but I’ve already done them. The trusty old Laptop is of cause a brilliant invention as I can have a moan to others who may have the same problem. One of the many things I like about GOY is that as our gardenns (here in the UK) get mothballed for winter, there are other GOYers across the world to chat to. “Oh to be in England now that Spring is here” OK it’s true but anything would seem nice after months of cold/wet weather. You see I’m moaning already (typically English) When I read about gardens in New Zealand and The States for example I become quite envious. I do believe that we’re all affected by the weather especially as we get older. Even the TV news seems not quite so bab when it’s sunny !….I’m playing music this morning, Lol. I don’t know about you but I find some consolation in that as I get older, time goes buy much quicker, unfortunately it also applies to Summer.(another moan) Am I going to have to wait ’till Spring to feel cheerful again ?

I don't like the winter months at all, but I save all my household jobs and decorating to give me something to do for a while, I think January and February are really the worst months in the year, and long for March, with hopefully some warmer dry days. I will console myself with plant and seed catalogues and reading all the garden mags I've saved over the summer, as well as chatting to likeminded 'friends' in cyberspace :))))

Up early this morning and Hurrah it's raining !!
I should have plenty to do in a couple of weks when have moved house. All my poor plants which have been stuck in pots can be planted up and digging in horse muck. Will have a lawn to sow where they are dismantling the pond. The inside of the house can wait until after Christmas.
So if you're really bored there is lots of heavy work to be done down the road LoL :~)))

Yes the winter months are useful for catching up with neglected chores......I like to read a lot. and like Grindle browse the garden catalogues....I plan and dream what I would like in the garden and of course this winter my hoped for allotment....I'm looking forward to planning that!!
Our GoY friends in other parts of the world are going to be particularly popular over the next few months.:)

I find January the worst month, It seems to start on Boxing day and last until February, that's almost 5 weeks.

very true :(((((((

I'd like it to STOP raining for more than a day so we can get things done outside...

Same in Brum today, torrential ! Popped out to feed the birds and got soaked ! As you say, the great thing about this site is that it's worldwide. It's now coming into Summer in Australia and I love to visit Bernieh's pages. Wonderful pictures and fantastically informative ! I don't think that this Winter is going to be as bad as previous ones, thanks to Goy ! :-))

I would rather be in the garden than in the house ,but as my family are still at home I do have to to do some house work. Also as we are getting modernised next year I have loads of sorting out to do but the call of the garden is still stronger(.Its chucking it down here todayand windy)

Its pouring here and very dark but its November which I love as 3 family celebrations this month. Then xmas to look forward to and by then the nights are getting shorter. January there are real signs of all the bulbs we have planted. Lots to do in the house so no I dont get bored frustrated yes that I carnt garden much but we go for lovely walks instead. Have you ever thought of doing winter volantary work Heron?

We've just spent the last hour and a half going the the organic seed catalogue, me on line himself with paper copy deciding what veg seed we want for next season's growing - some of which has to be planted sooner rather than later - lol

It kept us out of mischief given that it is STILL raining grrrr

~ just had my list of free seeds from the RHS to browse through AND WE HAVE SUNSHINE!

I hate not being able to get outside, but at least I wont be bored this winter! Between work, Uni, studying at home, & voluntary stuff, I'll barely have time to sit still for 5 mins! When I do get that 5 mins, am I on the couch with a cuppa? Nope! I'm here!!

Stop showing off, Arlene!!

1 Nov, 2009

~ admittedly after overnight rain but there is blue sky with fluffy white clouds~ the forecast says 100% chance of rain so won't be showing off for long Marie!
I really don't like dark evenings either!

1 Nov, 2009

Nor me! Its a dark afternoon here! I've got the lights on!!

1 Nov, 2009

Our lights have been on all day... Still I've made a nice loaf of bread and once it cools a little more we'll have with cheese and a glass of something for lunch.

1 Nov, 2009

Send me some, please? I just had to throw my bread out!! The birds'll be happy tho! I'm off to work, no rest for the wicked! See you later, enjoy the bread!

Have fun MadP

I dont like winter full stop, hate the dark nights, at this time of year i know i should'nt but i can't wait for xmas to come and go, as we are on the right side for the light nights to come back as the shortest day is 21st Dec.

raining in yorkshire too. put on watreproofs and repaired the netting on the fruit cage this morning. decided to go in the greenhouse and repot house plants. 10 mins in the rain stops typical. still better than housework.

Weeding or ironing, which do you like best?

1 Nov, 2009

It rained, yet again, all bloody day... I almost want to scream with the desire to be outside. Yes we 'could' have done all sorts of crap jobs in the house... like true mountaineers (which we used to be) we didn't! We 'festered'!

1 Nov, 2009

heron it is weeding every time. the effects last longer!

1 Nov, 2009

Thankfully I didnt get sent out at work today!
Heron, I'd rather weed than iron any day, as the mountain of ironing waiting to be dealt with will attest!!

1 Nov, 2009

hoping daughter will do mine tomorrow as she isnt at school til tuesday. [might try bribing her!]

1 Nov, 2009

I'd bribe anyone to do mine, I hate it!!

1 Nov, 2009

I'm with you Heron, absolutely loathe the winter, in particular November (fog, first frosts here in London, wet, damp cold) I detest with a vengeance - all that winter ahead of one, I just want to crawl under the bedcovers and stay there till spring, really. But, during the winter, I wash all the curtains, clear out and clean the wardrobes, move all the furniture and clean under and behind stuff, wash walls, sort of springclean, only in the winter. Got to do something to keep moving and stop myself just eating everything in sight out of sheer boredom - and I certainly won't be doing any of it once spring arrives. Not a particularly good "housewife" the rest of the year, it has to be said.

I agree, bamboo! I'd love to be allowed to hibernate!!
Shame we cant!!
I decorate , which forces me to have a gut-out, cos everything gets moved!

2 Nov, 2009

?what's ironing LOL

2 Nov, 2009

I HATE winter. Cold, snow, dull and dark days. The only thing to do outside is shovel the snow off the driveway. :o(
Too bad my "months off" are from now until March.
Still, there are the house plants to care for. They've been sadly neglected over the summer. There are a million gardening magazines to look at as a friend gave me several years worth of back issues. There are all the household jobs to do.....NOT ironing...I don't do that anymore...thank goodness for permanent press. If I have to iron it, it is not worth having...lol.
I'd much rather be out weeding.
Our bulbs aren't going to be showing any signs of growth until at least March. You are way ahead of me over there.

2 Nov, 2009

Fortunately, being a man I can't iron but in a village near me someone's opened a shop where you get all your ironing done, I wonder where they get their staff? It would be nice to hibernate Bamboo but only if I could have the equivalent time added onto the Summer. All that said I suppose that November fog you mentioned has a certain atmosphere (for the want of a better word) I have a pic of fog somewhere, I'll post it up. It's not one I took, I actually bought it from a boot sale!

2 Nov, 2009

Ugh, not looking forward to seeing a pic of fog, Heron! And Gilli, at least you get snow, which does make everything much brighter in terms of light levels, as its reflective. But I certainly don't envy you your winters there. Ironing? oh yes, well, if I tell you that I've only ever possessed one iron and I've had it for almost 40 years, you can probably guess how much of that I've done in my life - hardly any! And here in London, Heron, you can pay a lady to come to your house and either do your ironing there, or take it away and she brings it back again all pressed, and that's been available for over ten years now. I've never used that service, but I know plenty of working women who do.

2 Nov, 2009

I want a steam generator iron, but theyre soooo expensive!! I tried a friend's & its magic!!
