Fire Pink

Genus: Silene.

Species: Silene virginica.

Fire Pink is a short-lived perennial native wildflower of Ohio and is one of the only red flowers in the woods. It likes rich open woods or rock outcroppings. Also called Catchfly, referring to the sticky sap that its hairs exude, catching flies and other insects. Its red flowers attract hummingbirds, which help pollination. It reproduces mostly from seeds.
