Goldfinches on the up

Just spotted this news item on the BBC site:

Apparently goldfinches are now one of the ten most common birds to be seen in gardens, which is good news for them and for backyard twitchers!

They have deserted us this year Fran, I was thrilled last year at the amount visiting my feeders and took lots of pics, I haven`t seen a single one this winter...

I'm lucky enough to have a regular group of about 8 which feed every day. Because of where the feeders are and because I have a rubbish camera, I can't get pics without spooking them. I feed them Nyger seed all year round. I love their call, too. Like little tinkling bells. Love them. Glad they're on the up.

Good news for the goldfinches...
I don't see those in my gardens, but lots of sparrows. :o)

Good to get lots of sparrows, TT. They are supposed to be in decline.

Yes ... sparrows in my gardens don't seem realise about the decline... I put a photo on GoY recently of seventeen sparrows all feeding in the snow ! :o)

Sparrows definitely made a comeback around here, they have taken over the ivy in my bottom hedge, was going to chop it down by half last year but the birds won and its still there, lol..

I don't have them here perhaps they are wise to that Sparrow Hawk that is still around ...

We don't see sparrows at all here, but every year brings more goldfinches - so beautiful! There are a lot of teasels growing in the hedgerows and at the edge of fields - perhaps that's the reason. We get Buzzards here, and have actually seen eagles on a couple of occasions, but I doubt they'd bother themselves with something so tiny - they're after bigger things, such as rabbits and hares, I think.

Maybe it's a bit early for them to be your way, Lincs? or a bit late? or something? *s*
