Hanging Baskets etc.

The weather has warmed up quite a lot since last week. I have brought out all of the Dahlias now and they seem to be none the worse for it. I also pinched out the growing tips as I heard it made them more floriferous and that I would have flowers for longer (makes sense).

This is the one that Siris sent me last year after I drooled over it in her garden..lovely orange daisies on black foliage. One of the Bishops children Sue thinks. :)

The Fig Tree has also found a home outside the Greenhouse. It has the shelter of the Greenhouse and also the Gate wall, so hopefully it will be happy here for a while in it’s pot.

The Vegetables have all come on really well since the rain started again. Isn’t it amazing how much they respond to the rain even though I have spent hours and hours watering them with a hose!

Just in case you wonder…that black trough…that’s Willow’s paddling pool! lol!

Today I wandered in to the garage and saw a messy pile of hanging baskets on the ride on mower. I wasn’t going to do baskets this year, but relented. So off we went to GC. (Good news, they had 20% off plants today) and I bought 3 plants for each basket…all surfinias, mini petunias and those kind of things. All blues, reds, pinks. Nothing else, I wanted to keep it simple. New liners for six of the baskets, and some improvised ones using compost bags. Nine baskets all together so even more than last year. Six hanging in one apple tree and three in the Bramley. I also removed the basket from my bicycle and planted that up with a pelargonium and three red mini petunias for the patio. Should be lovely and colourful in a few weeks time, and I can always take them in the greenhouse if there is a cold night forecast. But hopefully that’s the end of the cold winds now ….please!

While at the GC I also bought a big blue Agastache to fill a gap in the blues and pinks raised border as I’d removed a clematis earlier that wasn’t doing well. It’s now relocated beside one of my taller roses. Should do better there I hope. Sometimes Clematis won’t grow whatever you do…I think the slugs attack them when they are just starting out, and it knocks them so hard that they never get going again. But hopefully this one will grow now.

Must say, for May, the garden looks lovely. I am chuffed to bits with it :)

A lot of time spent training them to go to the loo on the gravel GG! But they are very good now. The way I did it...every time they got out of bed I took them to the gravel and commanded them to go. Sometimes I'd stand there for 20 minutes with Molly. She still tries it on occasionally with a sneaky turf performance! But they are very good now. :)

Oh your garden is so pretty, Karen. I like hanging baskets but this year we don't seem to have any.

(I think you added the last image just for me . You know I WANT ONE! I have said so often enough.)

Great idea to put hanging basket in the tree - should look fantastic later!

Great photos, like the one of Molly under the tree with the hanging baskets, particularly.
Ps the flowers on Bishops child are single and coincidentally the colour of the pot, in which you have it planted.

As always, your garden looks fantastic! Like Vjd, am jealous lol. Did my pots and wall baskets last night, came in a 9.15pm. So nice to have the lighter evening, this time remembered to put on insect repellent, forgot Saturday and got 7 bites on the small of my back
:-(. Look forward to seeing more of your garden through the summer :-).

I'm not surprised that you are "chuffed to bits" with your garden, it looks stunning, so fresh and cheerful. I'm not good on hanging baskets, but do admire them hugely, yours should look stunning when they are out, I hope you will post a picture then. The Pod is of course something to lust after!

One year I tried the hanging baskets in the tree, only I put catnip in them. I ended up with some pots being knocked down and no catnip.

I am pleased as this year I planted Dianthus in my balcony half baskets. Every time I go out there the perfume gives me great pleasure. They face south, easier to keep moist.
Think I will do it again next year with Dianthus all over the half baskets.

Gosh...lots of lovely comments. Thank you all so much. I am ..like many of us..feeling upset and tearful today. Fallowfield is where I lived for a couple of years when I was a student in Manchester. Today has been a bit tougher than most.

Anyway..thank you all. A terrible squall got up last night..high winds, thunder and lightening. One of my baskets came down from the tree, but not too much damage there. One of my Dahlias was knocked flat, but seems ok.

Two years ago someone kind..I think it was Sheila..sent me some aquilegia seed from her pale pink aquilegia. I've had marooon doubles, dark blue doubles and now some paler pink ones are showing. They are all so pretty and are giving me so much joy. Little things...:)

Thanks everyone for looking in x Karen x
