Spring Project 2016 - Vegetable Garden

This month we have been lucky enough to get our drive surfaced with tarmac (it was rough hard-core that had been compacted before). The loose gravel was not good underfoot and every day I would go over on one or both of my ankles walking across it. Not good for the doggy paws either. So OH decided it was time to have it done properly.

Once he had decided that, I took the opportunity to tentatively suggest that perhaps we didn’t need quite as big a ‘car park’ in front of the house and asked very nicely if I might have some ground in front of the greenhouse to grow vegetables in raised beds. It had to be raised beds as the hard-core was about a foot deep and no way to get all of that out and disposed of between the two of us…that would have been a job too far!

So Here are the before and afters for you! Hope you agree that it has really improved this part of the garden and it’s great to have a bit more space for vegetables now!

Here’s the little plot I had marked out with breeze blocks and the contractor had painted it out for the workmen.

Here’s the beginning of the work on the drive…

And this is the finished job as far as the contractors were concerned. Friday 20th.

But there was a lot of work still to do for team Fraser. First we headed to the plant nursery to select a tree for in front of the greenhouse and we planted a Sorbus Cashmiriana there and an Arbutus on the other side for evergreen interest.

Luckily that DIY Store beginning with W had an offer on and you could get 2 for one on long decking planks, so OH set to work immediately after the contractors left…

And soon we had this….this was Sunday 22nd

Then today…

Climbing French Beans, Red Cabbages and Green Purslane in here now….

Just this one to fill up and plant now. The soil is ordered for Friday….

Just a list of the Veggies being grown this year, for future reference:

Beetroot mixed colours
Salsify
Green Purslane
Watercress
Dwarf Peas
Cabbage -Greyhound
Rocket
Purple Mizuna
French Climbing Beans
Red Cabbage

Wow! You put the rest of us to shame, me especially! Such speed, getting it all planned, sorted, shingle, top-soil and plants done and dusted must put you up for a make-over show! Well done it looks great and you still have enough parking to throw a massive garden party!

Thank you Honeysuckle! Don't be put to shame though...I'd not want anyone to be shamed! :)) i'm absolutely cream crackered! Day of rest today, and probably torrow too! My OH has gone off to do a full day of surgery and supervising students today. I have no idea how he does it....amazing stamina! I think I'd better go and get him a good steak for his dinner!

Good stuff Karen...I like the modern colour of the raised beds.
Quite a range of produce you should have by late summer.
No Sweetcorn?? Is that because of space or do you not eat them??

27 May, 2016

No Paul, its not something we eat...but neither do we have the sunshine!

27 May, 2016

Oh yes, I can see where you are coming from as regards wasted space, I like the way you said tentatively suggested, its looks better as well, good luck with your veggie growing Karen...I love the photograph of the pooch looking at your handywork...
