Yes they are vegetables!! Monks are specialists.
The white flowers are PANCRATIUM MARITIMUM(SAND LILY) or SEE DAFODIL.
Extremely fragrant

Hi Bik. How could I miss this wonderful blog? Was is Agis Panteleimon or Axion Estin - the ship on the photo? What a beautiful view into monastery, where I could never come, cause am a woman :)) You know, that Holy place was many centuries called also "Garden of virgin"? I am curious, why?
:))
Lovely photos.

Love this blog, especially the views of Ouranopoulis.
We visited there one year on a trip out to view Mount Athos. How wonderful to see the photos of the monks & the monasteries so close.
We were staying on the Chalkidiki peninsula that year - beautiful all round.

So that´s the rose about which I read! They are rare here. Maybe in France not so far.

I think the white flowers (PANCRATIUM MARITIMUM(SAND LILY) or SEE DAFODIL) are the ones we used to see a lot in the northern part of Corfu on holidays. I wish we could grow them here. I remember them smelling so beautiful.
Especially around Agios Spyridon & Antinioti lake.
Beautiful spot, but lot more tourists when we went there in 2009, than when we went in the 1980s!
All these quiet little places get too well known, then they get crowds!!
We are a touristy village here in the Cotswolds in England & the village gets packed in the summer & there are still quite a lot of visitors all year round too!!

Hello Bik, I missed this blog and I like it very much. You have an artistic eye. Some of the pictures are interesting and some very beautiful. I like them all.

We go to Mexico for winter (every year) and there on Lake Chapala (near Guadalajara) they have lots of white pelicans . What a beautiful sight.

Thank you for posting.

Pancratium maritimum is on offer in our Scottish Rock Garden Club seed distribution catalogue. I am hoping I will be lucky and get some seed or maybe bulbs. I have been reading about it and it should be hardy here. Giving it some real sea salt water once a month seems to be the prime requirement. I'll let you know if I am successful.

Love the photos. I want to go back to Greece. Did I tell you that my husband's Aunt Ethel Beer started one of the Day Nurseries in Greece. She was an ardent feminist and of course, thought Moms should be able to work, or some-times had to work. She adored Greece and went every year for many years. Most of her friends were Greeks. How far is this island from Athens?

I will visit your country one day Bik, very inspirational.

19 Feb, 2013

Hi Bik I got some seed and an assurance that I should be able to raise plants using a tried and tested method given me by a fellow club member. I had already researched how to sow and grow the seeds and have 3 different methods. I will grow a sample of each in the house and the duplicate in the cold greenhouse. I will keep you updated but I have been told it might be three years before I get flowers.

Sorry Pancratium maritima seeds.

What a beautiful place. Love the houses high up looking over the water. And the flowers are very beautiful. Awesome country. Do you live there?

20 Apr, 2013

Hi Bik, I have successfully managed to get 6 seedlings from my Pancratium maratimum seeds. The roots are already growing through the bottom of the pots so I will need to move them from 10cm deep pots to something much deeper. I had never heard of them before you posted this blog so again thank you for sharing.

Thankyou for the tour...a beautiful spot indeed.

I know I'm late looking at this blog, but I'm so glad I found it. Fantastic photos Bik, you should work for the Tourist Board:-))

Wow, I have been catching up on the blogs and this one is so beautiful. Young people on this site do not always think about the older set... These blogs, and yours in particular for us (the older set) is a visual trip to a place we would like to go. It's such fun to sit at home, and imagine. Thanks for taking the time to post this. I am so appreciative!

I have enjoyed reading this blog again. Sadly Bik my seedling Pancratium maritimum did not survive to produce flowers but I hope to try again if the SRGC has seeds.
