A few aquilegias.

By anget

I have grown a few from seed. These are the ones that are out at the moment:

‘McKana’ hybrids, new this year. It’s fun seeing which colours they are:

The blue on is not very clear because of the breeze. (Nothing to do with my ineptitude..)

‘Magpie’, also new ones. My other half likes these. I’m not keen because they degenerate into muddy dark offspring within a season or two.

‘Chrysantha’ (with rather large weed behind!):

in a mix:

And the delicate little ‘Chocolate Soldier. I’ve managed to retain 2 plants from one pack. New this year:

More ‘Magpie’

Finally, some blue alpinas, descendants of 2 plants I bought for pence from Lidl 3 years ago. They have spread under the birch tree with lots of self-seeded pink lychnis coronaria. They fill a difficult area, so I am more than happy with this bit of help from “Mother Nature”. It’s the sort of gardening I like.

I used to have lots of self sown pretty ones. But I bought new ones 3 yrs ago and introduced the fungal infection that was attacking them. I only have about 3 left.

you have some very pretty ones.

Thank you all. I try to grow from seed, although I don't have wonderful success with them, because it's so expensive to buy them as plants. In the last garden I had lots of light-coloured Mckanas; they seem to be darker ones from this packet!
I just wish I had AndrewR's skill and patience! His species seedlings are astonishing. (see his blog. today).

A lovely collection of aquilegia plants, Ange! I haven’t tried them, but, quite fancied doing so. The white one looks a bit different from what I’d know, but, it’s such a nice looking flower. I like your first pic, the colours are lovely! However, I’m drawn to the yellow one too! 😊
Right, must get off..I’ve a trip over the bridge now to Lincolnshire...ciaó..happy gardening everyone!

You must be pleased with them, such a variety of colours and shapes.
You've inspired me to get a packet of seed and get going!
(I'm on my last two - a blue and a blue and white)

Thanks Kate and Yorks.

These have taken about 12 months round to get to planting-out size. I've learned not to plant them out when small.

They are one of my favs, they are all sooo pretty. I bought some seeds this year but never sowed them as the packet said sow this year for flowering next year, do you think they will grow if I sow them now for next year ?

LL: If you sow them now they won't be big enough to put out until next year. And you'd need to watch the temperature. I find they're erratic so obviously not an expert. Funny how the seeds that drop from plants in the garden come up like weeds!

My favourite flowers . . . you have a lovely selection.

A lovely collection. I love these flowers but mine all got a blight, possibly mildew so I had to stop growing them. Perhaps I could try again in a year or two?

Thanks Agnet, I have put them in pots and see what happens ;) its only the cost of packet seeds ;)
