IS THIS A SIGN OF SPRING?

We have a small half barrel which we use as a water feature in our garden, we grow one or two plants and last year it looked ok…..yesterday OH called me over and there at the bottom of the barrel were two frogs mating, a first for us in all the years we have been gardening…..no pictures I am afraid, thought it would not be appropriate lol

This was the pond last year…….does anyone know whether this is early of not? I do not know much about frogs, only that I like them.

That's a lovely water feature! I can almost hear the water splashing! A word of warning regarding frogspawn - the frogs who reach adulthood and at ready-to-mate stage will return to your garden feature to start the process again. If you want a garden full of frogs - OK - otherwise remove some of the spawn before it matures. ie: less frogs, less having to watch where you put your feet!

Looks lovely DD - we did a similar thing with a brown barrel and water and had tadpoles in it, Nariz given the advice needed :)) I feel early for them to get started baby making - few weeks anyway . Noticed the birds are getting loud and frisky too lately

Hi DD, I was only saying last weekend to my OH "I wonder if we will get any frogs in our pond this year". Only put it in last autumn, but I am hoping we will.
We were watching a programme & all the froggies were having cuddles! So it might be time.
Your pond looks lovely, idea place for the frogs.
Maybe they are first time buyers & just celebrating their new home! Lol.

lovely picture, DD; is the pond raised? sorry I don't see that well and can't make out fine detail. If it is, do you have something to act as a "ladder" for things to get in and out of it? *s* especially animals and insects that fall in by accident!

I've read that male frogs (or is it toads?) vastly outnumber the females, and that there's been occasions whenso many males trying to mate with the same female that she was actually drowned in the crush; maybe these two were making hay while they had the solitude!

With my little knowledge dd I would say this is extremely early, hope they are successful I love frogs and toads. I am hoping for some frogs to return as I think mine got the dreaded virus that was going around, so am keeping my fingers crossed for them to return. Otherwise I shall have to find a pond with some in it and try to get them going again.

It looks lovely Dd, I was looking in mine the other day but no signs yet in either pond, I didn`t get around to netting my bottom pond last autumn so I`ve got lots of leaves to remove, that is going to be a cold job but if the frogs are on the move I`d best get it done asap, my fingers are cringing at the thoughts of that cold water....

Glad you spared our blushes, DD2 :) I do hope you get frogspawn. In spite of having the village pond just over the fence I don't get many frog visitors in the garden :(

or maybe that's why, Gee? *s*

Dd. by the sounds of it your frogs are spot on with their timing, I read that quote=''most common frog populations produce frogspawn in February''. and the colder the water the better because the oxygen concentration is highest in cold water, so better for survival. Interesting. You could always donate any spare frogspawn to a local school maybe. :~)

but not via the kitchen door!!!!

I usually reckon the end of February or early March is when my pond gets used by frogs but no sign of any yet (but then there was ice on the surface earlier in the week so maybe it's a bit early here).

I've only ever once seen a frog in real life; we were at a scout campsite and my brother suddenly said, look! and I did, but it wasn't till he pointed it out exactly that I saw a tiny green animal on a green background.

I can well understand the reamark about watchint where one puts one's feet!

Nariz thanks for the info, will see how things go, we are both frog lovers so would welcome half a dozen at least.
Thanks Paul, it was quite a shock as we had not seen the frogs for months, thought the fox had eaten them!!
Willlin we had a large pond for several years, (with 8 fish) gradually the heron and a snake ate all the fish.....so we gave it away, but we missed having water in the garden, so last year was an experiment, and three frogs visited the pond much to our amazement.
Fran the pond is in the ground, with several plants in pots raised on bricks to provide a step up for any critters falling in.
Olive so do I, we did have a toad visit in the summer....did not realize there was a virus doing the rounds!! something else to watch out for.
Lincs being small it is easy to keep clean.....
Andrew it is slightly warmer here, almost mild, would you believe?
GM, Gee and HB thanks for your comments, will let you know if we get any frogspawn.....

Dotty, today we noticed frogspawn on the pond surface ... then Michael got quite a surprise when he realised a plant was moving ... that would be the two frogs mating beneath it ... lol!
