My woods

If you have bromeliads, you find that they have a flower and then set pups, which then need to be thinned. The old ones will continue to have pups, which means more thinning. I was given a lot from one of those thinnings of Bilbergia nutens, which planted in groups around my woods. They are beginning to go into flower now. With pink bracts and green buds, the actual flower is an insignificant part of the show.

There are several groups, and here is one:

I also have them mixed in with a philodendron, which is growing up a rock wall:

And they are kept company by Crinum, which maintain a few leaves during the winter:

I also have a Sinningia, which is in flower:

And several tree ferns:

On the way up to where my woods are, I pass this wonderful palm:

Also in bloom is a Protea that grows behind my house. It has grown to about 5 meters tall:

Of course, I just have to throw in a photo of one of my favorite seedlings. I took a seedling of unknown parentage, crossed it with Free Wheelin", and got this:

The palm sits on a place where the guy who owns it has built a micro-brewery.
The fern trees get a little abuse from the village junta (Council). They keep cutting the fronds back, even though they are 2-3 meters back from the road. Less so as they are getting taller, however. I have 4 or 5 varieties of fern that just wandered in.

He is lucky to have such a beautiful palm so you can get cheap booze on your door step each day ?

Such a shame the counckil keep cutting back those lovely tree ferns if they are not over hanging the road and two or three metres away are nt the council trespassing on your land. Glad to hear you ve got new varieties growing and the others are getting taller.

Beautiful, beautiful, Wylie! It must seem like living in Paradise--at least when you can take a break from keeping it from turning into a thicket! :)

I would love just one Tree Fern. Too cold and windy here.
Nice to hear from Tug again.
Happy New Year to everyone.

I was in New Zealand back in the early 70's, and came across a "forest" that was nothing but tree ferns. It was really spectacular. I would like to see them take over my woods.

I hope they do after looking up the New Zealand forest its beautiful.

Very interesting to see these plants in their natural setting

I have the top one in a pot, can't remember the name just for the moment, but it looks much better in your garden. Must think about planting it out, it had stood all our winters so far.

Honeysuckle: It is a Billbergia nutens. It will also withstand a lot of sun. The friend I got these from had them in full sun. I put them in bright light, and they are doing really well. He had also put an Aechmea in full sun and it got burnt and did nothing. He gave it to me and in shade it took off and flowered right away.
Hope everyone has a great 2018!

That first is Monstera. You have an ideal moderate climate. Good sleeping mild nights..never that searing heatwave either.
My tropicals are battle scarred-lol- from the years of a 32F (0C) here and there. We did stay at 1C this winter as our one coldest low. You really are like a wet San Diego.

This winter has been fairly mild. It got down to 46°F once. We had winds coming down from Iceland as those Nor'easters passed by. Usually it has gotten a little colder. We are like San Diego, but only the part west of I-15; and there aren't any Santa Ana winds to deal with.
We did get hail once this year, and the fog is starting to form again.

You are a z11 oceanic sounds like. No coconut palms or Breadfruit tree's...but a world of subtropicals from wet or dry climates would thrive there.
I could be very happy there!

A lot of the Z9 plants are happy here, but anything that needs a winter chill won't do well. Irises do poorly, lilies can be iffy. I have a feijoa tree that refuses to give a single flower and I have had it for 15 years.
