Bad news!

Had a call from the Vet last night, Bella’s annual blood tests indicate she has kidney disease. This is a blow to all of us. We have had a few dogs over the years but she is by far the absolute best! She is smart and fun and cute and loving.

The vet said that with medication and proper diet she could live another 2 years, so it is not an immediate emergency, as she is 13 already and has had arthritis since she was 6. But I guess this is the beginning of the end.
Bella has done a lot with us, hiking, camping and even touring Washington DC back when the kids were in school. Her favorite thing to do is to go to the coffee shop and sit at the outdoor tables and lick whipped cream off our fingers.

People always ask about her because she is so well behaved and has such a gorgeous shiny coat.
For us she has been the perfect pet!!!

I know this has nothing to do with gardening, but I feel I can vent to all of you because people who garden love nature and our pets are a big part of that!

So sorry to hear about Bella, but my cat Smokey was diagnosed with kidney failure at the end of last May, (he will be 17yrs on the 23rd april)and he his still doing quite well, i have to take him to vets about every 4-6wks for his injection, its funny now i can tell when he his ready for one, i did'nt think he would be with me for xmas, but he is & hopefully he will be with us for his birthday, sometimes people can't believe that he his ill.

~sorry to hear this~Wohlibulli!
~There are a lot of sites which offer herbal remedies and special diets for dogs which may help~we tried lots of things when one of our boxers was diagnosed with liver cancer and he lived a lot longer than the vets thought he would ~we spoiled him with fruity yoghurt ,chicken breasts, scrambled eggs, fresh salmon steaks ,etc cooked for him~ and I am sure he knew we were doing everything we could~I used to hand feed him! We were advised that he would have needed two major operations and that there was no garauntee he would survive them and that they thought it was not in his best interests to put him through them.
Bella has obviously had a long and happy life with you and I hope she can have as much quality time as possible in future ~and who knows she may have more time than you think!

I,m so sorry to hear your sad news , we went through the same thing 3yrs ago . it,s heartbreaking , we said all the same nice things about our wonderful friendly dog that everybody loved , you have to remind yourselves that he has had the best time possible with you and he wouldn,t want to be anywhere else ..x

Thank you all so much for the outpouring of sympathy and support. I knew that if I expressed my feelings to all of you it would make me feel better, and that is just what happened. She seems to be doing okay, still fairly active. We have switched over to the special food and she seems to like it. 10 pills a day was daunting, but the vet suggested wrapping them in Liverwurst and she really likes that. So hopefully she will do okay and stay with us a few more years. Thank you again, you are all great people!
Oh, and to Henry a BIG slobbery smooch in return!

Woof to Bella from my Sophie! She looks a beautiful girl! No wonder she gets lots of compliments, sounds like she is very well looked after. She certainly has lived a long time, I've not heard of her breed living that long, so well done you!

Thank you Gilli, Daftp (didn't seem right to just call you Daft) and Craft.
She is doing okay. Had a fall down the stairs so have had to put up a gate to limit her access and go to 2 pain pills a day, which makes the kidney problems worse but what is a life if you are constantly in pain. She is still able to get around and with a little assistance can still ride in the car with us so...so far so good!
