Severe drought

Severe drought

Posted on 6 Sep, 2008 10 comments

Last weekend we went to the reservoir near our home and I took some photos of how far down the lake is.
We have been in a drought for 7 of the past 10 years and a severe one for 3 years now, as you can see the lake is down about 25 feet. This lake provides water for most of Georgia and some of Alabama and Florida. For those who don’t believe in climate change I give you…. Lake Sidney Lanier!

Hmm. I've gone off you, Wohli. (only joking) Fancy showing us that when we are floating about over here! Do you get news about the UK on your TV? Some poor folks have been flooded out AGAIN! I can't believe the difference between your weather and ours. Does the reservoir being so low affect your water supply?

We make an effort to get BBC news in our house, most people don't. So I do know about your floods.
The weather has a big effect on our water supply, we are getting arguments between the states as to the amount of water released downstream to Alabama and north Florida. We have watering restrictions in place right now that allows you to water only on odd or even days (depending on address number) and only between 10pm and 10am and no other outdoor use of water, no car washing, pool filling etc.
We were hoping for some rain from Hurricane Hanna but it looks like she has decided to turn more northerly, so we got nothing. Maybe Hurricane Ike will oblige.
While all this is happening in the southeast they are having floods in some areas of the midwest from Hurricanes Gustav and Fay.
Just thought it a good example like your flooding of how bizarre the weather is becoming!

Tis true. We seem to get unseasonal extremes too. This September is much hotter than it should be. Last year we had drought too, but this year the early summer had reasonable rain fall. We still get pretty cold winters here, but we are getting the odd year when it is much warmer in the winter than in the past. So things change but I don't know the official stats for Hungary.

Oh...... Please send some dry weather to the U.K!. We are saturated here in Bristol- the wettest summer on record. It's still raining heavily as I write this. The storms are so heavy, and we have had continuous rain for weeks. The light levels are incredibly low, and the garden plants are saturated. I have never known such a bad summer here in the U.K.

You think we could work out a trade, Grenville. Hot and dry for cool and rainy! I wish!

Amazing to think youd welcome some hurricane hannah rains according to forecast we going to get tail end of it here. Do feel for you all in south west UK - honestly ,areas close to us at risk .Pickering on national news tonight only 12 miles away.
Havent got the worst of it yet as it takes a few days to pour down from the moors.

Amazingly my pond has not flooded after 24 hours rain.

Just to remind those of us in the UK that two years ago we had the hottest summer on record and some of us were on water restrictions. Our reservoirs were even lower than wohlibuli's but after two wet years, we have floods! The world climate is definitely changing

I've moved all our succulents indoors, Sandra. Normally they are outside for a summer display, but not this year ---they were satuarted and were showing signs of distress.Thankfully they have all recovered now they have dried out and are warm.It must be very difficult for those who have cacti and succulent gardens in the U.K at the moment if they are receiving the rain levels that we are getting here in the South west.
