The South Devon Steam Railway.

The South Devon Railway goes from Totnes to Buckfastleigh and half way is my favourite place in Devon – Staverton Station!

Everything is run by volunteers and they all love what they do. Some dedicated gardeners look after the flower beds and help to give it its ‘olde worlde charm.’ On the platform there are oak barrels, leather suitcases and milk churns all adding to the character of the station.

It is just like stepping back in time and to sit on the wooden bench on the pretty platform, waiting to hear the whistle and then to see the steam coming from the engine never fails to thrill me!

Yesterday we travelled from Staverton to Totnes which was unusual for us because we usually travel to Buckfastleigh which we know very well.

Come and join me as we take a step back in time. 🚂

I hope you enjoyed a nostalgic trip along memory lane – those were the days!!!

Certainly did enjoy that journey Chris.... It must have been used many times in films etc... We are fond of Totnes too. Don't they have their own currency there?

Yes, they do. I am not quite sure how it works or how it benefits them but I will look it up!

That was wonderful. It's nice that there are volunteers to help look after old places like this, so that future generations can see what it was really like.
I would have loved to come with you in person but the photos will do instead :)

How lovely . . . thank you for that Chris. I love Totnes, and could happily live there! (I believe Mary Wesley did?)

I can certainly see why you love it so much! Do they serve Cream Teas Chris? I love the flowers and they have really paid attention to detail with the posters and the suitcases. Brilliant.

I enjoyed every pixel! Wouldn't it be great if the big railway stations took a leaf out of their book - a few flowers would be a good start. Favourite shot though is the one with the engine. Did anybody go through Llanfairfechan in the 50s? They even had a life size model of a big snake winding itself round a lamp post. Just loved that when I was 9...

So pleased you all liked it too and it was good to have your company.

There is a stationery buffet car on the platform where they do serve cream teas ( I think!) so, does that clinch it Karen, you're definitely coming?!!!

Would love to see you all there.

What a lovely station to visit even if you don't take a train journey.

Thank you for the day out with you Wildrose. It is lovely to see that people care enough to share their skills for our benefit. I wonder how many volunteers they have to look after all those plants and to keep the station looking pristine.

First of all sorry about my incorrect spelling of 'stationary' in the blog!

Linda, it is a lovely place to visit and just watch the trains coming and going, especially on a special events' day when there are more trains passing through.

Scotsgran, I am not sure how many volunteers are needed but it must be a large number. When we were there it was the day when all 'spare' volunteers turn up to do whatever needs doing.......they seemed to be having a lovely time, sitting, chatting and drinking mugs of tea!!! Not a lot of work going on though!

It does not look to be in need of much or maybe they started very early in the morning.
