Fireplace demolished!

Worth all the hard work and mess.
I have to say.....t's so much better.What a fantastic feature!

I agree with paul but do feel for you about all the mess. I'm going to be starting on my diner room this winter. No hope of finding a lovely inglenook like yours but to get rid of a naff electric fire with a disused back boiler behind it and hairy wall paper previous owner had put up. It looks lovely and homely now.

Nice work on the fireplace. Now what's an inglenook? Maybe there's one in my house! :)

Oh I so feel your pain but come on....thats a fantastic fireplace now! What a huge difference. If you dont mind me saying..the old one looked a bit 'unfriendly' where as this looks welcoming and warm. You will really feel the difference in the heat given off too, honestly. Congratulations...and a bread oven too...what a find! We didnt find one in ours sadly. I think ours would originally have had an iron stove as there was no lintel really, just two massive stones across the top. Marvellous...well done! :) i so remember the messs....:(

Wow,Chris..I think it looks wonderful,but I know how you were so unsure about having it done.even though John was all for it..I must say,I agree with him,as it really was worth all the mess to get it to it's original design,as much as possible..love the little flat Iron on the top of the log burner,which is lovely..also the tealights and flowers..are all the Potholes filled in now at Sam's farm lane? let's hope so with all that rubble ! :o)xx

Definitely an improvement, Chris, and worth all the dust and mess! As Karen says, it looks more welcoming.

Bathgate - an inglenook is a big open fireplace, sometimes also called a 'chimney corner'. In some old farmhouses there was enough room to sit inside (at the side of the fire), and it would often be the only source of heat.

We have one similar but ours was built when we built the house not as deep as yours , imagine those winter evenings sitting round that :-)

Might have been a lot of work and mess but Oh Boy!! it was worth it...

Having done the very same......I can still remember the mess and the smell!! Oh and I took it out by ourselves, wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow....then did it all again many years later in another property!! the dust takes forever to settle.....BUT......so rewarding I love what you have achieved when you light the stove..you will forget about all the mess...... ENJOY!!

It has real character now and looks so warm and friendly.. You might end up replacing the furniture with period stuff to match lol.. (sorry!) Did you know you can get little fans that are driven by the heat rising from the fire and they spread the warm air out into the room? Our local country restaurant has one - great!

I think it's well worth it, even though the mess must have been horrible. It's beautiful!

I love the rustic beam! And I'm sure it will be a superb focal point in the room too...! ;o)

I am really envious of the character it has. I love open fires. next project is surely to rest and relax and toast your tootsies in front of the fire :o)

Your positive comments are working, so thanks to all of you! I am beginning to appreciate it after reading what you all had to say.

Those of you who have had similar work done have come through it and so will I!! I agree about the smell that accompanies all the dust and rubble......as I said to Sandra a few days ago it was like being down Poldark's mine but without him to brighten things up!!

Very apt regarding the smell...that is the one thing that I can still conjure up..... isn't that odd? Poldark wasn't around when we did ours lol mores the pity???

when this old fireplace was originally made.

Looks great. Did the workmen find anything behind the fireplace? Often objects were hidden there to ward away bad luck.

Absolutely nothing, more's the pity!
A treasure chest of gold, silver and sparkling jewels would NEARLY have made up for all the mess and upheaval!!

It looks wonderful & much more in keeping with the cottage. You are so lucky to have found the original bread oven door, did you insert it in the wall anywhere?
We did ours in the last place & had even more mess as it was 12th century hall house, we found an old bible up in the chimney & could see the toe holds for the boys to go up to clean. You will love that stove in the winter time.
