Magnolia 'Barbara Cook'

24 comments

As some of you will remember, I am Canadian by birth, having been raised in Vancouver, British Columbia and am now in the UK (since 1983).

I keep in touch with happenings in my birth city and found this wonderful story about the Barbara Cook Magnolia and wanted to share it with you. It is a most delicate pink…I’m going to check it out and see if it’s available in the UK and if so, if it would suit our garden plans.

Happy Reading….(the link shows the magnolia in flower as well as how it got its name)…

I did a google search and found the Barbara Cook magnolia available via Junker's Nursery....but not sure what the description means?

~~~~~~~~
MAGNOLIA dawsoniana 'Barbara Cook'
This exceptional pink selection was selected in California in 1967, though not registered until 1993, when it was named in honour of the registrar’s wife. Much broader petals give the flowers a greater fullness.
Specimens Only - please ask for details
Any ideas?? Woops.....thanks San....you've got the details of the nursery....I wonder if any of our members have ever used them (for a reference?)....ta, San :)
your welcome jacquie hope it helps :o)
Their website looks outdated but I've sent an email so will post an update if I hear anything back. Looking at the few prices that were on their website in 2010 it seems the prices are around the £35 mark...not sure how that price stacks up.
i guess thats about right for magnolia especially the specialist ones jacquie, thought i read it grows to about 2.5 mtrs so not bad if you have the room, and dont think they are fast growing either.
I`ve looked at the site and I think the flowers are gorgeous, good luck with your search. :o)
Thanks, LD....with just starting out as a beginner I'm not sure I could justify £35 but it's in my little notebook as a "wish for plant"....a lady can dream! :)
Magnolia's were first introduced in Britain via Exmouth Docks. It's my birth place & Exmouth for obvious reasons has the Mag as it's emblem flower. I bought my mum a mag before she passed on & every year I drive by her old place & enjoy seeing the mag growing bigger & flowering so beautifully each spring. It was too well established to transplant into my garden & it's nice the folks who moved in have kept it. I have a yellow mag which is in it's 4th year so it should start to get a move on now. What do they say about trees? 1st year they lie, 2nd year they try & 3rd year they fly !! Good luck with your search Whisty.
Have you tried Burncoose J? I think they have about 180 vars. Hope you get it. :)
11 Mar, 2011
Well....the good news it is available via this nursery (see Sanbaz's info above)....the bad news is it comes in a 7.5L pot and is £99 plus delivery.
I guess I need to win the lottery before I even give it a 2nd thought! I haven't tried Burncoose, Karen...but I will take a look now.
Disappointed...but hey-ho (thanks too for all the replies; pleased many GoY friends have enjoyed reading about this special magnolia)
I don't want you to think I'm ignoring your blog, but I will have to read the 'thing' later on this evening when I'll have time :)
That's fine, Hywel...it's difficult to keep up with blogs sometimes. You'll get the chance tonight to have a relaxing read. Hope you find it an interesting read too :)
so sorry jacquie, it was expensive though, sounds big but couldnt they get you a smaller one ? i bet someone else will sell them but its knowing who :o(
12 Mar, 2011
Oh that is expensive Jacquie, I wonder if there is another site where you can buy one.
12 Mar, 2011
I checked out the Burncoose website but it appears they do not stock the Barbara Cook magnolia. From what I have read it appears to grow very tall so I can take some comfort in the fact it would be too large for our small back garden.
Thanks for your replies all. x
Didn't get a chance last night lol - do it later :) Sorry lol but I'm determined to see it :)
13 Mar, 2011
Well Hywel....I don't think one of these will be falling into your shopping trolley anytime soon. lol Very expensive so you'll have to consult your fairy godmother or re-jig the mortgage...lol
Hope you get a chance to read all about it one day soon :)
13 Mar, 2011
I've seen it now, at last lol - A lovely story :)
I don't think I'll be having one !
