Writing on Fungi

I mentioned in a comment on another GOYers blog that we used to collect fungi from the forests on Bowen Island, B.C. and would write on them to record memories of the day it was found. It would seem this is not a common practice in the UK.

I have been able to find two of these from many years ago. I apologize if the writing is difficult for you to read but the photos will give you an idea of what they look like.

The first fungi was written in April 1962 when friends & relations were visiting me on Bowen Island. I would have been 13 yrs. old at the time.

The second fungi was written in 1979 when my husband’s sister & her husband came from the UK to visit us and we took them to Bowen Island for the weekend. By this time I was married (of course!) and we had a daughter (3 yrs.) and a son (1 yr.).

If you want to try doing this with a fungi you have found, it’s very easy…

Collect the fungi from the source (usually a dead/rotting tree) being careful not to touch the white underside. If you touch the fungi with your fingers it will leave marks.

While the fungi is still fresh, write/draw whatever message you choose on the white side and put to one side.

The fungi will slowly dry and as you can see from the photos they can be kept for years. Have fun :)

A special way to keep memories alive…

Oh WLass found this facsinating, I`ve never seen this done before - can`t wait to try it out. The writing is amazingly clear.

Yes, Stroller...I was surprised how clear the photos came out because it's easier to read the writing in the photo than it is with the actual fungi right in my hands!

I noticed too in the 2nd photo that our 3 yr. old daughter must have tried to draw the picture on the right...maybe trying to copy mommy because I always draw happy faces, as you can see on the left of the fungi.

Interesting. Never thought of doing anything like that. Lovely for the children to do.

Glad you like the idea. I have another one somewhere in the house (or possibly the garage) that my dad and I did when I was about 5 yrs. old but I can't find it at the moment.

I agree Cinders...it is great for children. When we went to B.C. 4 yrs. ago the grandchildren did draw on some of the fungi but I think their dad said not to take them home to the UK because of possibly bringing something nasty in the bug realm into the country. They collected shells on the beach instead...lol

Incredible that they've remained that way for so long. Such a clever thing to do. : o )

Awesome idea! I had never heard of this either, but they make great keepsakes & certainly are a conversation piece.

I am surprised Grammazoo that you haven't done this...I was convinced it was a Canadian "thing"....maybe only on the west coast?

What a novel idea, Jacquie. They are certainly a reminder of the part of the world where you lived before. I would never have thought of anything like that.

Thanks for all the kind comments....I do treasure the memories that the fungi resurrect. I hope one day I can find a fungi in the woods here in the UK and put it to the test to see if it will work here.

Happy to import a "craft" from British Columbia :)
