Sunflower

Sunflower

One of my Sunflowers which grew to about seven foot was keeling over at a 70 degree angle due it’s the weight. (It was only supported by some bamboo canes.) So out it came.

Whilst I was doing so I noticed what I thought was a leaf on one of it’s neighbours until I took a closer look. It was a slug four foot up the stem. I didn’t realise they were so athletic. It was duly disposed of.

They can walk as far vertically as they can horizontally. A favourite place for them to hang out is in the crevices of old trees. In autumn, this year, when you are out walking, have a look at some of the older trees, like next to the paths in old graveyards or older trees in neglected gardens, places where they dont use slug pellets or try to eradicate them and you can often see either them or their trails making their way up or down the tree, depending on if its time for them to get up or go to bed!!!

Salt doesn't work on my arch-enemies the SNAILS! I am still fighting them....if they learn to fly too, I shall get a shot-gun...or a pea shooter, anyway. LOL.

You could have a snail shooting competition with your GOY friends Spritz. See who can send them the furthest.

This sounds like fun. Snails are mean I pick them up and through them over the fence not in to my naighbours but into the field its very neglected and i like to think of it as relocation. My eldest daughter loves snails she puts them in her pockets and then i find the remains in the washing machine so they def can't swim or breath under water so not invinsable you could try that Spritz. lol

I really do wish there was a humane way we could 'despatch' them.
I have read that they are territorial and if you throw them into a field over your fence or indeed into your neighbours garden lol, then they will just come back, and they can live for three years.

I do lob them into the stream for a 'swim' - so I am a horrible person, I'm afraid. At least those ones don't come back! :-0

I'm with you Spritz. I give mine swimming lessons in the pond. Theres lots of water snails to show them how to swim, but I guess they are slow learners.

dam and blast i thought i was doing a good thing giving them flying lessons they can't possibly have a big enough brain to know how to come back. I think i might start doing what my gran used to do bag of salt and drop em in mean i know but no pond and no stream plus theres only so many snails that lots can fit in her pockets.

I show Henry every snail I find - but he just sniffs at them and turns his nose up! Do french dogs eat snails, I wonder?
