I used to work at Heathrow Airport and eighteen years ago when we had the last snowfalls as heavy as these everything was delayed or cancelled because the snow ploughs could not be found. They were parked somewhere in the middle of the airfield covered in – WHITE TARPAULINS.

Haha you people from the UK always have such a dry sense of humor, I love it. Sorry Gilli. I had a bit of a worry yesterday when I heard Heathrow was closed. My friend ( from Australia ) went the day before yesterday to London to her daughter who lives in Cornwall. I wonder if she ever landed? Perhaps diverted to where??? Her daughter was supposed to pick her up and when I saw all these cars struggling in the snow I wondered if she made it as well.
The daughter is having a baby on the 11th, so I guess by then my friend would be in Cornwall, lol. I can remember snow in England, this was thick too. It was in 1959 during the Christmas period and we were living in Wimbledon and drove all the way to Siddlesham ( don't know if anyone knows that, it is in Devon I think ) to have Christmas. I don't know how long it took us to get there, it was slippin-slidin with the car.I wish all you people in the UK the best with this extreme weather condition. Hope it soon thaws out. Oh, and our friend in Dover rang us and said he was off work, as the trains were not running. He takes the train into London each day, lol. What a standstill to the economy.

M, the usual excuse is that it's 'the wrong kind of snow'!!!

We don't often get this much snow all at once - so we are not geared up for it. Everything grinds to a halt.

Yes, I know Wimbledon very well - I went to College there! I don't know Siddlesham, though.I'll googlemap it and find out how far it is from us.

Hmmm - all I can find is Sidlesham in Sussex. There's a Silverton in Devon but that's the nearest I can find there
