I Love it but....

This pretty bush was already in the garden when we moved here and I love it, but I’ve no idea what it is. It looks rather like a Hydrangea in the flower, but the leaves look like possibly a Ribes.
Can anyone identify it for me please?

It looks like Viburnum opulus Waddy. Beautiful! :))

CK I think you're spot on, I've just Googled it and they do look the same. You clever girl ;)

:)) It's a lovely shrub and you have a fine example! I've never grown it myself...nearest I got to this was V. burkwoodii, which also has balls of flowers, well, almost...and they have a lovely scent too. But it is not nearly as spectacular as the lovely Snowball! :))

I agree with Karen.and.it's a lovely shrub...My neighbour has one,and its looking lovely just now..just like yours :o)

If I can manage it (no guarantees) would you like a cutting Karen?

Isn't Karen clever Bloomer? I've tried to Google it before without success. It always looks wonderful.

(blushes) I'm not clever at all! I just spend a lot of time with my nose in gardening books! :)) A cutting.....well, yes, how could I not want one....very kind of you, but don't worry if it doesn't work. I won't hold you to it!

Do you prune it Waddy? Mine is much taller than that and less dense - but just as lovely in its own way. I never thought of restricting the height. I was a bit sad when I got it home to notice that its a sterile variety and I wanted the red berries - so now I have both!

What variety has berries please Stera?

18 May, 2014

I'll give it a go Karen..Fingers crossed.

Bloomer, you're no challenge, I'd like to say, just a very good friend :)

Steragram; I don't really prune it as such. As I didn't know what it was, until now. I've just stopped it it encroaching on my neighbours, they're not gardeners in any shape, way or form and wouldn't appreciate it. It doesn't get berries either as far as I know, unless the birds eat them before I've notice. It's not easily seen from the house unfortunately.

I've Sussed it Waddy. This one, the snowball, is sterile. But the other kind of Viburnum Opulus, the Guelder Rose, which I already have...it's the one with the beautiful shiny red berries, but it's flowers don't make a ball.

You want semiripe wood from preferably non flowering shoots, not the floppy end bits or the hard woody bits,

Take the piece above the harder wood, cut below a pair of leaves and remove them, then count 2 or 3 pairs up (depending how long it it you don't want a long cutting) and cut there.

put them into moist compost, around the edge of the pot, I keep them in a shady area in the gh and be patient.
do plenty some work some don't.

hard wood cuttings can be successful too but thats later in the year, see how you get on.

I did some hydrangea earlier in the year.....we had to move an old hydrangea that was a cutting from his mums many years ago.....its survived as have quite a few of the cuttings that I have now potted individually, be careful though....cuttings, like Goy can be addictive!

Oh thank you Pamg, that's all great advise. I will give both a try and see what we get. ;)

Good luck Waddy ......fingers crossed X

Missed this one Waddy, I have two of these, gorgeous when in flower, unfortunately the one in the back garden gets smothered in blackfly every year so I lose the flowers, keep threatening to get rid but it helps hide one of my bins, do you ever have a problem with yours? the one in the front never seems to attract the blackfly...

Yes, Lincslass, I have the same problem, but at the first sign of trouble I spray with a 'garlic wash' and it seems to do the trick.

I like the sound of the 'garlic wash' Waddy - I'll try that. Mine also gets covered in blackfly, and as soon as I see them I spray with an anti-bug aerosol which does help a bit. Last year almost all the leaves became lace-like but a member on here told me about the spray, and I was delighted that the Viburnum grew healthily again this year.
