Butterflies Boys and Wisley

Today we went to RHS Wisley to see the butterflies in the glasshouse.

On our arrival it took the boys and my wife seconds to realise that the butterflies were everywhere.

They were up high and down low.

They were flying around everywhere. They were of all different shapes, colours and sizes. They had notice boards all around with various information on them, such as where they were from (Belize in central america, which made me smile as I had been there once for 6 weeks) and what species they were.

This one landed on my thigh and it is an ‘Owl Butterfly’.

My two boys really enjoyed themselves along with the rest of the visitors to Wisley. The photos on this blog are all from my two boys Charlie and Harry.

As you leave the greenhouse there are large mirrors asking you to check yourself for hitch hikers.
We then went for a bit of a walk around some of the garden. The Witchazels smelt fantastic and the multitudes of snowdrops were a pleasure to see. Hellebores were starting to poke their heads out, some were already up and showing off.
Not long for all the daffs to be in full swing, followed by the emerging Peonies. It was nice to see so many of the beds mulched with rich dark crumble organic mix.

We had a great day out, the butterflies are only there until the 22nd of this month. (Not sure how they catch all of them, some will obviously hide).
On the way out a quick look around the shop where we bought a few things.

Some primulas for the two pots with a carex grass already in them that are situated by the front door, my wife bought more alpines (she has now run out of room for cactus, and is concentrating now on her outdoor containers). My youngest, Harry bought some Dahlias as he wants to enter them in the flower show later in the year.

Well you all had a great day out, love to go there, but for me i'd have to stay over for a night, to far for me to visit.

Sounds like a great place to visit. Photographs too; when I try to photograph butterflies they fly away just as I am taking the picture.

Bulbaholic, I have been known to chase a butterfly all round the garden, snapping away as soon as he/she lands! Some successes, mostly failures, but NEVER give up, that's me with butterflies!

The neighbours already know that I am crazy, so they take no notice!! lol.

Amy, Harry is soon to be 11. Out of my two boys he is showing the most promise on the gardening side of life. They both appreciate gardens open space etc., and like so many other youngsters these days all understand recycling and being eco friendly.
That said it is a shame that plants and flowers dont grow quicker as typically children these days like instant results. He was happy with his sweetpeas last year and he has chosen Dahlias for the garden before, as he believes they are his.
But I might have struck gold the other day at Wisley when I asked him if he would like to choose anything and he realised that for £10.00 he got 4 packs each containing two dahlias each. I then showed him how easy it is to make extra ones (cuttings) in a book and he seems really interested. So I have promised him that he can grow them and enter them in our local club flower show.
Fingers crossed I will keep you all informed how he does.
