Still Digging

Still digging and the war with the couch grass is reaching its climax. I had a bonfire at the week end and burnt a load of it. The idea of leaving it for a few weeks to dry out is good and it does burn (with the aid of some BBQ lighter fluid!)

However the couch grass is fighting back and each new section needing digging is matted with web like intersections of roots. It makes even the smallest forkful of soil difficult to lift. Luckily I have my better half who has been sterling in her efforts of shifting through the soil and picking out each and every root. Division of labour – I do the brute strength, no brain stuff and Janet does the specialised fine fingered part, which of course I’d be useless at.

Like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers we make a fine team!

That's a lot of grass. I hope you can eradicate it. It looks difficult to dig ...

O yes, lots of fun for all there, lol...

I have spend hours clearing Couch Grass from an allotment.
When my Maincrop Potatoes and Onions were stolen I felt very bitter. Finding witnesses difficult. Asking Defra for grant money to pay for CCTV cameras brought forth a letter from Minister of State saying that the EU grant money was only for farmers. I am voting OUT in the referendum.

At least Tom and Janet are working on this problem on their own garden. The Couch Grass takes two seasons to completely eradicate, but it can be done.

Soul destroying stuff couch grass, but satisfying when you start to get the upper hand. Been there when Father took the rotovator to the land and spread it everywhere!
Now we have ground elder, just as tenacious, but fine finger work with the roots can get rid eventually - at least that's what I keep telling myself!
