The Shivery Starling Symposium

‘Despite the very chilly weather, we’ve flown in for our Starling Symposium.’
‘Heat rises, so we are waiting up high …’

‘… yes up EXTREMELY high …’

… another Starling delegate arrives …

‘But, this bird here isn’t a Starling … hop it .. go join your Sparrow convention …’

Down below in the Gravel Garden, the Skimmias and Heucheras are smiling through the icy air …

…. a solitary primula puts on a brave face …

… the heroic Aucuba lightens up a dark corner …

… and Phoebe’s bright buds hint at the promise of pretty petals soon to unfold …

Truffle loves the new blue squeaky toy … but he doesn’t like cold weather …

’Let’s go back indoors !’

Finally a full quorum is in place for the Starling Symposium …
‘Hurry up … it’s freezing out here …’

‘Must get through our avian agenda before bedtime !’

They very much appreciate the bird baths in my garden.

Nice to see Truffle enjoying some fresh fresh air. We don't seem to get Starlings in our garden anymore, strange.

Hi Siris ... Starlings used to nest under the eaves of houses inside broken wooden fascias .. but when plastic gutters and fascias became popular, there were less nesting places for the Starlings ...
Truffle prefers to sunbathe outdoors on warm days !

Hi Tt, great blog {as usual}, I don't know how you think these things up, but carry on doing so, Derek.

Isn't it interesting the way birds, especially starlings and rooks, always face the same way. Must be something to do with the wind direction.

26 Jan, 2017

It was one of the coldest days of the winter here, mainly because of the icy wind blowing.

A very uplifting, cheery blog Terra.

Your blogs are always like a breath of fresh air or an uplifting breeze, TT!

How did you possibly get such a wonderful close up shot of the Starlings sooo high up on the top most branches of that tree? You obviously used a zoom lens but the picture is so very clear! If I did the same I'd only end up with a blurred shot not crystal clear like yours!

I love the way you make up these little dialogues for the creatures you photograph! Truffles will need to keep warm with such a short coat! I expect he's quite an active little dog so how you manage to get him to sit still while he has his photo taken is beyond me!

Quaint that's what starlings are!! we get our fair share in our garden, and they always make me smile, just like your blog's do TT.......so thanks for that, as I have said in the past keep em coming!!

The starlings in the USA were introduced by the American Acclimatization Society who were hell bent on ecological disaster by introducing every bird mentioned in the works of Shakespeare into the United States. Most of them were released in New York City's Central Park. A very enjoyable blog Terra.

Thanks Derek, Stera, Chris, Balcony, Dotty, and Loosestrife2 ...
Starlings are very photogenic ... I hadn't realised specific birds were released in Central Park.

We haven't seen a starling in the garden for a very long time. On Facebook someone in Dorset had posted a video of starling murmuration. It was really beautiful.

It's the RSPB bird watch this weekend TT. I'm entering my count for the first time ever...! I had no more than 3 starlings in my hour watch! But later this afternoon there were hoards in the garden and on the fence...! They managed to peck away all the container of meal worms...! Greedy little devils...! lol ;o)

Thank you for the Birdwatch reminder. The past two years I've done the count but neglected to send it in which is a bit daft. Must do better.

I haven't seen many starlings yet this year but last year 13 young'uns made short work of a fat block I'd put out.
I'd like to know how you got such a good clear pic of them so high up too, mine are useless!

Eirlys, Linda ...
those starling murmurations are amazing, aren't they ...

Thanks Tracey, Stera, Greenfinger, Sue, and Bathgate ...
the starlings are very entertaining to watch, especially when they splash about in the bird baths.
