An English Village Fayre ... fun, flowers and sunshine ..

Last week dealt me a succession of stressful traumas

… and the days were wild, wet and blustery.

…………………………………………………………….

Thankfully, Saturday was a complete contrast …

… a sudden switch … a dazzling day …

… it was good to be alive …

… blue skies … sunshine … feeling fitter … happier

… miraculously, we’d made it to the village Fayre …

……………………………………………………………..

The charity dog show was held on the lower lawns …

… to raise funds for the Pet Blood Bank …

………………………………………………………………

These cattle were keen spectators …

… every one of them a dog show enthusiast …

… they’d arrived early for a front row view …

……………………………………………………………..

… they’d studied all the dog breeds, and had definite opinions on who should win the Best In Show award …

………………………………………………………………

Meanwhile, let’s check out the Fayre …

……………………………………………………………..

Oooh … plant stalls …

…………………………………………………………….

Lots of variety, and plenty of colour …

……………………………………………………………..

Which plants would you choose ? …

… and would you like an ice-cream too ?

……………………………………………………………..

Pets’ Corner … Guess the weight …

… hmmm … looks like a chubby one …

……………………………………………………………..

Please meet jovial Josie … the pygmy goat …

……………………………………………………………..

… and children learning the art of Maypole dancing …

… a tangled web we weave ;o)

……………………………………………………………..

Back at the dog show, classes were progressing well …

…………………………………………………………..

‘Pick me … I’ll give you two paws, four paws …’

………………………………………………………..

A Fayre stall selling sugary sheep and sweet flowers …

………………………………………………………..

… or would you prefer real flowers ? …

…………………………………………………………

Something to add interest to your garden …

………………………………………………………….

… or ESSENTIAL reading for every gardener …

… ‘Tales of the Country Eccentrics’ …

………………………………………………………….

And in the background … all the while … melodic music …

…………………………………………………………..

… delightful sounds from the Silver Band …

… those teddies were enjoying a tuneful picnic …

…………………………………………………………..

Band percussionist … female owner of the guide dog …

…………………………………………………………..

What’s this big bird looking for ? … eggs ? …

……………………………………………………………

Here are some eggs … and spoons …

Let’s have a race …

……………………………………………………………

Or would you prefer a wheel barrow race ?

The Jack Russell Terrier wanted to join in …

… but couldn’t find a partner …

……………………………………………………………

Most races ended in hilarious disorganised chaos ;o)

……………………………………………………………

Down on the lower lawns …

… Truffle had the feeling he was being watched ..

……………………………………………………………..

Nope … must have been mistaken …

……………………………………………………………..

The end of a beautiful day in idyllic English countryside …

……………………………………………………………..

We’d competed in three dog show classes …

Waggiest Tail, Fancy Dress and Best Tricks

… and we were lucky to win three first places …

… Yum … that means lots of biscuit prizes !

Thanks for sharing our day at the Fayre …

Happiness and good health to you all …

A lovely blog. In the small village where I used to live in Rutland...about 2 and a bit miles from Uppingham we used to have what they called the village fete either in june or july...the highlight of the year for us kids...it was always a lot of fun with peg on the line game, guess the weight of a pig, throwing balls at tin cans etc etc...and the Gretton Silver Band playing in the background...happy memories of a good childhood...and long hot summers.

28 May, 2013

Great day out for all by the looks of the photo's, its very amusing seeing the cattle observing all the fun and frolics, well done to Conker and Truffle for earning the lovely rosettes although I suspect the treats are far up on their list of prizes, it was a good weekend for most of us I think as regards the weather, shame it didn't stay around a bit longer but a lot better than last years bank holidays if I remember correctly, lol.....

29 May, 2013

Thanks Sue ..
The cattle were extremely friendly .. Lol.
Conker and Truffle are very delighted with their biscuit prizes !

Yes.. it was a gorgeous sunny day ... back to cold and rain again now... but hopefully, next weekend, we'll all enjoy dry and bright weather again ..

29 May, 2013

Lovely pictures TT. Everytime anyone asks what is typically English I would reply a village fete. The bands, the parades . Maybe a dog show. On a lovely sunshiny day there is nothing better to cheer you up and make you feel better.

Thanks for posting this lovely blog

29 May, 2013

Hello Dorjac .. Thanks so much ..

Yes ... I agree about typically English ...
... a sunny day, and a fete/fayre with bands and games and a dog show ... the epitomy of all that is wonderful about an English village and the surrounding countryside ...
Glad you enjoyed the blog. :o)

29 May, 2013

I enjoyed it too and what a wonderful village fayre it was in glorious weather which makes all the difference. There was so much going on and everyone was having such a great time.
It was like an episode of 'Midsummer Murders' but thankfully without a murder!!!
:-)

29 May, 2013

Hi Chris .. Thank you ..
It was a glorious, unforgettable day ...

... but I did hear someone say...
... 'I could murder a cup of tea' ... ;o)

29 May, 2013

Looks like a grand day out Terra, congratulations to you and of course to the head gardener and assistant :)

29 May, 2013

29 May, 2013

Now that I would have loved to have seen Terra, brilliant :)

29 May, 2013

It all went well except Conker's lawn mower won't go very straight ... he makes rather a lot of crop circles. ;o)

29 May, 2013

29 May, 2013

Hello Fran ...
Thanks ... yes, it was a wonderful, wonderful day ...

We've lost count on the rosettes ...
but Truffle is good at counting the biscuits ;o)

29 May, 2013

What a fantastic day....wish I had been there. Love a plant stall. Your first class garden helpers seem to be widening there top dog talents.

29 May, 2013

Hello Linda ..
You'd have liked the plant stalls ...
... and the ice creams ..
and the band ... and the dog show !

29 May, 2013

29 May, 2013

Thank you Dotty ...
We were so lucky to enjoy so much sunshine ... xxx

30 May, 2013

Sounds like you all had a brilliant day out, TT. Village fetes are usually a lovely way to spend a summers day - but I wouldn't have been able to resist the plants or the icecream - I'm addicted to both :)

30 May, 2013

Hello Gee
yes, it is a day I'll always remember ...
Millie would have done well in the dog show ...
lots of fun classes such as Best Rescued, and The Dog the Judge would like to Take Home :o)
Useful to have the ice cream van so close to the plant stall ... Lol.

30 May, 2013

You didn't say the ice cream van was NEXT to the plant stall! Heaven. :0)

30 May, 2013

Hallo all. Further up the blog I mentioned the garden fetes that we used have in the village in Rutland where I grew up, I also mentioned the peg on the line game...terratoonie asked me what this was...so...a clothes line was hung up between two chairs...or 2 post several feet long and about 2 foot high, on the line were loads of clothes pegs....the spring type ones and dolly pegs...the idea of the game was to take off as many pegs as you could off the line...without using the other hand, when this hand was full you then used your other hand to do the same...without dropping any pegs from either hand...just a kids game but at the time it was fun.....btw I´m now going back well over 50 years.

31 May, 2013

Thanks Rogi ..
That sounds like a game which would still be fun today ..
I had not heard of peg-on-the-line before you mentioned it ..
..thanks for explaining ! :o)

31 May, 2013

I'm pleased you had an enjoyable day and won some prizes as well :o)

31 May, 2013

Hello Hywel ..
thanks .. a fabulous day ..
... and Truffle is still counting the biscuits ...

31 May, 2013

Good ... I'm glad to hear it :o)

31 May, 2013

Your blog reminded me of watching Midsomer Murders TT, just the setting of the show of course.....quintissential english summer fayre. Lovely. I do love to hear a brass band too. Great pics.

Our village fete took place yesterday, quite a contrast to yours. We had to enter the car park through the exit because some plonker had blocked the entrance with their parked car, managed to queue for a cheeseburger before the heavens opened, mad dash for the beer tent for a glass the wash it down with, then we dodged other drowned rats while scanning the other stalls, quick purchase at the book stall before sheltering in the bric-a-brac tent. There we spent quite some time reminiscing as we spotted items not seen since our youth, while the puddles grew larger making the ground more and more squelchy. One final purchase, a large flowerpot saucer for 50p, before darting for the car. Couldn't believe there wasn't a plant stall, what is the horticultural society doing? I fear the takings this year will be well down, plans to update the village hall deferred for another year :-(

16 Jun, 2013

Such a shame Xela when the weather goes nasty on the big day. So much arranging and organising needed. Strange though we probably recall the events that went pearshaped better than the ones that were idyllic. We went to a lovely event some time back and it was wrecked at one point by a really scary man with Terretts syndrome, who went right off his trolley, and eventually had to be publicly subdued by his carers, after reasoning failed. It was an unnerving experience, as there were lots of children, as steam trains were involved. Some of them were really scared.

16 Jun, 2013

Fêtes, fayres, dog shows and similar events are all at the mercy of the weather ... and they rely on no person or group of people spoiling things for others ..

I went to this same fayre and dog show a few years ago and it rained non-stop, but we carried on regardless !

Such a lot of work is done in preparation for these days, and it is a pity when much needed funds are not as great as expected ...

We were so very lucky this year with the warm sunshine :o)

16 Jun, 2013

So true, the change in our weather patterns has caused much heartache and disapppointment across the country in recent years, taking the edge off many outdoor events and depleting both funds raised and the number of volunteers willing to help. For many years my husband and I served on our local fete committee, it was hard work but very rewarding..... we were lucky to have the weather on our side then.
I fear I may have given the wrong impression, we enjoyed this year's fete despite the rain but felt so sorry for the fete team. Earlier in the week I dropped off some books for the bookstall lady, she was staggered by the number of donations this year and was worried about the effect the Kindle may be having on such stalls. Her's was huge, a veritable treasure trove but few punters this year.

17 Jun, 2013

Hi again Xela ..
yes.. you were able to enjoy the fête despite the bad weather ..

The main preparations for these events is usually done by just one, two or three people ... lots of hard work .. and if those few are no longer able to carry on, sometimes the events just disappear off the calendar.

Luckily the fayre in my blog has been taken over by a new enthusiastic committee, so there's lots of optimism for the future.

17 Jun, 2013

We went through a village near Sawbridgeworth yesterday. There was a lovely, well attended village fete with lots of people visiting. The parking was wonderfully informal and off road too. Lots of variety with stalls and activities. Over the road a big modern band stage set up to entice younger people, in full voice. I hopped out for a quick look round. Came back with a couple of well grown perlargoniums for 50p! How good is that.

17 Jun, 2013

And to think...all the areas in cities were once villages.
What have we done?
Excellent blog, Terra!

5 Aug, 2013

I thoroughly enjoyed this blog showing good oldfashioned fun, thanks for putting it on Terra. Fantastic plant stall too, I wouldn't have come away empty handed. Congratulations to all three of you on your prizes too. I don't get on here as much as I used to, so trying to catch up :-)

5 Aug, 2013

Such a good blog I could easily have been there myself! Love these wonderful village shows :o)))

10 Oct, 2013

Thanks everyone .. we enjoyed the day very much...
traditional fun :o)

Sorry I'm late catching up with comments ..
I wasn't able to be on GoY so much during August/Sept.
