Hello,
getting started can seem over whelming and square foot gardening works well for me. All of mine are in boxes on my patio and this year I have increased my space to 38 square feet, last year I had just 9 sq. feet. Your climate is very different of course but i found lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and basil very easy to grow, I have some pics on here from last month, if you want a look.

Hi Sue
The sunnier the better. Easy stuff to start with are onions, chives, strawberries, peas and beans. Herbs are good because many are permanent. If , like me , you are going to be organic slugs and snails can be a problem- you have to get crafty. The main thing is don't try too much too soon and enjoy it! "Square foot gardening" is something I have been trying- there are a few members on this site doing it and you can get information on the web.
Best wishes, Mike
