Devon Sky, Mist n Wheal Betsy

Driving to and back from devon at the weekend , a few interesting sites

The sky on the way down

as the traffic rolls on

plane

orange n blue

early morning sun

This shot is entitled ‘No Ivy Mon-Sat 9am-6pm’ ; )

the sun emerges

rises over Dartmoor

and lights the sky

a bit later the morning mists

as the sun hits the valley

and the mists flow down it

is there something there, in the mist?

aha

as the light comes up

revealing

more, of Wheal Betsy

and the remains of the old engine house

lets take a look, watch your step

lovely isn’t she

the sheep seem happy

now thats a nice wall, there are old workings, spoil tips, dry channels and old shafts all around.

still standing strong, top

n bottom

lets go down a bit for a shot a bit further away

there we are, engine house with battered old fiesta

splendid

thanks for joining me ; )

Nice blog, Stevie, just little bit sad atmosphere.
Pics No. 13th and 14th (from the bottom) are the most impressive. Reminds me of Jakub Schikaneder, one of my favourite painters. He had that gloomy atmosphere like I see here in his paintings

The fourteenth pic is extraordinary. Wish to have it in frame -for meditation :)
I wonder, what were those engine houses - what was their purpose in such empty place?

was it tin mining there? the buildings are very similar to the cornish tin mines?

Be great fun to do it up!! Don't much like the idea of hidden shafts though!

Thanks folks, pleasure
Kat, it was lovely n bright n fresh with all that mist rising : )
Sticki, silver lead mining
Lulu, well the chimneys already sorted, just have to open the fireplace. Theres a map on the web, was thinking of taking a pickaxe. troible is you need a furnace to extract the silver

17 Oct, 2012

Ooooh alchemy!

17 Oct, 2012

or lead ore with silver in it. I think lead melts at a lower temp but you still need it very hot to be able to extract the silver

17 Oct, 2012

B&B project? lol. lovely pictures:)

17 Oct, 2012

silver lead? is lead poisonous?

could you just get the silver please stevie ~ can you make jewellery anyone?

Love 'as the light comes up' photo, quite Cathy & Heathcliffy, different moor I know!! Sticki you took the words from my mouth about grand designs, but I prefer it standing there all silent, rather than glass staircases, state of the art kitchen and steel steps etc.......pity Ivy cannot visit all week.

poor ivy!!!!

17 Oct, 2012

Brilliant blog & shots.

Lol, I think Ivy is ignoring the restrictions
Sticki, I think its called silver lead ore OR lead silver ore, and yes lead is toxic but I think if you do the process right you dont come into contact with any lead and the silver is refined over
Gm when i hear the name Heathcliffe I always think of this, that photo just needs a women in a red dress coming out of the mist ; )

We live close to Dartmoor and have never taken such atmospheric photographs. They are so evocative and the lighting is perfect.
Lovely.
We need to get out of bed earlier to see Dartmoor like this!!!
Unlikely!!!

Some really lovely pics Stevie but like Katarina says there is an air of sadness about the place, I wouldn`t want to be there when it was misty, it gives off a strange feeling...

Lovely skies, and the old mining building brought back memories of many a trip to Devon and Cornwall during the 60s. Thanks for sharing your lovely pics. :o)

Thanks folks, pleasure
Wildrose, well the mist was only the evaporation as the sun hit the ground and it only lasted for a few minutes so had pulled over just in time to catch it. As I walked down Snoopdog it had already cleared.
Linclass, well it felt very fresh and quite cheerful to be there but I daresay in winter it might be more gloomy

18 Oct, 2012

Im so glad they havent pulled it down like a lot of old buildings have been, even as empty buildings they have a beauty of their own and i think it works well in the landscape

18 Oct, 2012

Fantastic pics ! Love the misty ones :)

Sticki, I think there was an early national trust placque on it somewhere so it was 'saved' from demolition. Its a nice scene as you drive by in all seasons : )

Cheers Pixi

lovely pics, Stevie. Went to Cornwall, around St Just, ages ago, didn't have a digital camera then so all I could do was take pics in sections and try to match them up when I got them back from the chemists! yours are a lot better. If there had to be dark satanic mills, what scenery to have them in

22 Oct, 2012

Thanks Gudia, not sure Fran, still done on a cheap digicam, well at least one dark satanic mill but nature seems to have won over : )

23 Oct, 2012

its a bit late there in India Gudia 1.20am!! ; )
