A walk on the cliffs

Glorious weather – what a lovely change. So never mind the weeding, lets go for a walk!

Here’s where we start

Off up the first stretch

A solemn warning!

A long descent

O dear, they don’t mean us to miss this!

Down at last

That’s Caldey island on the right, where the monastery is – those monks knew how to pick a good spot!

One of the sea caves

this little bay is called Church Doors

Here’s another view showing both “doors”

The we retraced our steps and oh dear, steps was the word – it was hard enough going down but going up was much worse!

But finally here we are back at the start.

We saw a good variety of flowers but the photos aren’t very good – it was rather windy for one thing and I also kept getting the focus a bit out. However, these will give you a flavour of some of what there were.

First, common enough but always pretty, toadflax.

Greater Knapweed – not seen this before, only the black one, which isn’t nearly as pretty.

Agrimony – another one new to me

Ladies bedstraw

Musk mallow

St John’s wort – don’t know which one

Pretty as always – woody nightshade

Ever cheerful little ox eye daisies – not very tall out here on the cliffs

Don’t know what the next three are – help please!

There were lots of others too – self heal, red clover, millfoil, kidney vetch, red campion…lovely.

Finally, just as we were leaving we spotted this little chap!

If you made it through to the end of the blog, thanks for looking – I hope you enjoyed the outing!

Thank you for a lovely blog. So good to see Wild Flowers thriving. Here in Northamptonshire the farmers have killed them off with pesticides.

Hi Stera, such a lovely walk along the coast so glad I went with you, wouldnt have liked that climb back mind!! I love the 'church doors', I adore little nooks like that and that sea cave is wonderful, such gorgeous weather too. Is wild flower no.2. Valerian? & no. 3 a toadflax? Not sure though!

Thank you for that beautiful walk.

So glad you all enjoyed it - we certainly did! Yes, the steps back up were extremely daunting. I am not very fit and next day my thighs were Very stiff! Grandmage thanks for the suggestions but I'm afraid they aren't the right ones! The first pic of all is toadflax and there wasn't any valerian - doesn't seem to be much round here, surprisingly.

Diane, we were very interested on one of our walks to see that the banks of sea pinks on the cliff path suddenly gave way to plain grass for the width of one field only - and in that field was a man in a tractor spraying! Nuff said. We still have hundreds of primroses on some of the roadside banks in spring, with violets and occasionally early purple orchids. There is also the occasional wood carpeted with snowdrops in February. May is the best time to come for the flowers.

I hope I've persuaded some of you to spend a week or so in Pembrokeshire!

Its very easy Tropicalbabe. Go to your home page, click on Your Options and scroll down to Write A Blog. Then just follow the instructions. If you get stuck just send me a Private Message. To do this you click on my avatar which takes you to my home page, and then just click on the option Send a Private Message. Bingo! The more pixels there are in the pic the longer it takes to load but it gets there eventually.
