Meant to be?

When we retired, we were very lucky to sell our house in Kent quite quickly – and we had already decided that Somerset was the area we wanted to live in.

As we’d both been at work full-time, it wouldn’t have been fair to have had a dog, and that was one of my post-retirement ambitions! My dog was going to be a yellow Labrador and I’d already chosen his name – Henry!

My family gave me a set of puppy equipment as a retirement present – a bowl, a bed, a toy, a book on Labs, and even a collar tag inscribed with his name!

We moved down to Somerset on October 21st 2004, to a small house which was our ‘base’ while we looked for our permanent home – and decided to look for my Labrador!

I spotted an advert in the local paper – we rang – we visited …….AND

We chose each other from the litter! Awwww…Henry! Did you really look like that once?

In the weeks before he was old enough to come home with me, we’d been lucky enough to find our permanent home – that’s another story! So Henry only lived in the tiny house for a few weeks.

Then we came here – and Henry doesn’t realise how lucky he is to have a big garden. He does love being out there, though!

And of course his favourite place is in the stream!

Every morning, he goes out and does a patrol around the garden, just to make sure that all is well in his world. He often sits ‘on guard’ on the front path, as well – making sure that anyone who comes in gets a welcome – or a warning bark!

What else does he love? Swimming – in the sea if possible, or else when we take him to the canal.

in the sea

retrieving a stick in the canal

He loves ‘helping’ me in the garden – by ‘pruning’ my prunings even smaller!

Like all dogs, he enjoys playing with his toys – which sooner or later end up in pieces!

Even his new squeaky cow from Ian and Carol is now just tiny scraps of green plastic.
But how he enjoyed it!

All Labs are ‘stomachs on legs’ and Henry lives for his dinner times!

Please feed me!

I shall point at my dish until you take the hint!

He’s often to be found on a sunny day enjoying the warmth in the porch.

So why have I posted this blog today? Well – Henry was born on October 21st 2004. A mere coincidence? No – I reckon it was meant to be! – don’t you?

A late addition – Henry was sent two pressies from Ian and Carol – so I saved one for today! He’s been rolling it round with his nose…and squeaking it,too. I think he likes it!

Happy Birthday, Henry!

Lovely pics of Henry and your garden in the backgound, many happy returns to the birthday boy. Some things are definitely 'meant to be', I saw Daisy's pic on the rescue centre website and that was it........! :o))

21 Oct, 2009

Happy Birthday Henry.
I can feel that you adore him :-) I wish Bonnie would swim - she paddles in our brook but I cant get her to go in the canal which is just over the road. Once full grown its hard to remember them being so small. Bonnie came from a litter of 10 and I remember going to see them and I was approached by this gang of tiny, friendly black, waggy puppies.

21 Oct, 2009

He's going to have the other toy that Ian & Carol sent him! He did unwrap them when they came, but I'm keeping it for him to play with we come in from the garden. It's a squeaky ball. Otherwise, as he's meant to be on a diet (LOL) he will be treated normally - no extra treats, I'm afraid.

We're very lucky to have him - he's affectionate, sweet natured, very waggy, travels well, (mostly) obedient, lovely, cuddly, a good companion - what else can I say? :-)))))))))))

Happy Birthday Henry :o)

It's nice to hear a bit of his history.
Sometimes I think things happen on purpouse. It seems strange things happen too often for them to be coincidences. Something simmilar happened when I had Blodyn.

Henry looks a happy dog and no wonder considering where and with who he lives :o)

21 Oct, 2009

21 Oct, 2009

I have a sort of ex relative in North Devon, so I could make a trip to see them as well at the same time, I guess - bit of notice next year would be great.

Happy Bithday Henry, although its belated now (12-20am) but Henry wont mind. It was lovely to read about Henry`s life Spritz and the photo`s are lovely. Its nice to look back and remember the little fluffball you first saw and then look at the handsome lovable chap he`s grown into. I also chose the name Malik before we had him and it was Oh so right. 22 Oct, 2009

Yes, he did. :-))

He just came in and played with his new ball for a few minutes! It was a not-too-subtle hint that I should play as well. LOL.

22 Oct, 2009

Dogs tend to do that. Lol :~)))

22 Oct, 2009

I didn't though. Nasty person! I was typing! It's his turn later. Soon. When I take him out....:-))

22 Oct, 2009

Oh Islands in the sun ............... I just thought you might like me to sing to you! Lol

22 Oct, 2009

Nope. Not that one, anyway - nor 'Raindrops keep falling on my head' either! lol.

How about 'Here comes the sun'?? 'cos it's gone again!

22 Oct, 2009

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are grey!
Especially when your on an island in the sun! hint hint :~))

22 Oct, 2009

What ARE you gibbering about, Digger??

22 Oct, 2009

He won't shut up about me saying I'd like to make another island bed in the lawn, Marie. HELP!!

He'll be singing that Harry Belafonte song next... or is that too long ago for you to know? I hope Ian's too young to know it, as well! LOL.

22 Oct, 2009

22 Oct, 2009

Hmmmm....

22 Oct, 2009

Brilliant blog Spritz! A very Happy Birthday to Henry dog.
That photo of him in the sun by the door would make a fab framed pic. (Think Ian's been on the sherry again?!LOL)

22 Oct, 2009

He's been on something, for sure!

22 Oct, 2009

I'm ignoring him...until he stops SINGING!! I've had to put ear-plugs in!

22 Oct, 2009

Belated happy birthday from me Henry you're such a lovely boy, lovely blog. I wish Rosie and Meg would play with toys, chase a ball, anything like that. Maybe they weren't played with as puppies. They won't go near water either. Some rufty tufty jack russells they are! :-)

22 Oct, 2009

Do Jack Russells usually like water? Labs do - did you know that they have webbed feet? - yes, really! Henry swims a lot faster than I can,

22 Oct, 2009

No, I didn't know that Spritz but I did know they retrieved from water. I think jacks being hunting dogs should not bother about a little thing like water, mine won't venture outside if there's a spot of rain!

22 Oct, 2009

Hahahaha - for a dog that LOVES any sort of water, Henry is soooo funny when he sees it's raining...he doesn't want to go out in it! How about that?

22 Oct, 2009

My dad's lab was like that too! Wierd!

22 Oct, 2009

Sounds pretty sensible to me, really - I might go swimming at the pool, or in the sea, but I don't like being rained on either!

22 Oct, 2009

LOL!

22 Oct, 2009

Once he's out, he's into every puddle, pond, stream, ANY water he finds! lol. Splash, splosh, shake!

23 Oct, 2009

It's the last bit that always gets me! Lol

23 Oct, 2009

And me!

23 Oct, 2009

belated birthday wishes Henry
such ahandsome chap
always a puppy at heart when theres toys to be played with

23 Oct, 2009

happy birthday henry. sorry its late. been on 'hols'

23 Oct, 2009

He did, thanks, Sbg! :-))

23 Oct, 2009

Just found your blog Henry, what a nice story. You are gorgeous. My Barnaby had A Golden Retriever friend called Henry. He taught Barnaby how to chew a stick albeit a smaller one. You I'm sure are the 'icing on the cake' for your owners. Lovely story.

24 Oct, 2009

I shall say 'Thanks' for Henry, as he hasn't learned to type yet, Heron! LOL. He also said that he likes ANY sticks, even if they're 6' long!!

24 Oct, 2009

One of my last labs used to prefer the 6' logs....trouble was we had to cross a bridge over the stream to get back to the car each day. She slammed into it the first time...stood and looked at it and then turned sideways and wriggled her body...and the 6' stick across!! She never banged into that bridge again!!! How I wished I'd had a video camera back in those days...watching her size up the situation was quite a masterclass in itself!!!

24 Oct, 2009

Belated Happy Birthday Henry. Hope you're still enjoying (or destroying) your toys :-)
My friend's Black Lab Bonnie is never without her stick, although she still can't understand why she can't get the bigger ones through the gate!
My pussy cats like all dogs - preferably from a distance of 100 yards!
Chris xx

24 Oct, 2009

Do you know - I have been astonished at Henry's intelligence with getting enormous sticks through gates or stiles! He refuses to leave them, and he has learned (no help!) to turn the stick round and pull it after himself with the end!

How about that? :-)) So Labs are very intelligent - especially at problem solving...true, Alz?

I'm afraid he chases cats.....sorry.....

24 Oct, 2009

I have to confess I have never managed to teach ANY of my own labs NOT to chase cats!! Perhaps that is my subconscious at work of course as all my neighbours cats come "visiting" and even blind Honey sends them off!!
When I was at the Guide Dog Centre...we always had a cat in residence and it was a fearsome beast that soon sorted out the young dogs in training...eek. Actually they were soon totally immune to her presence and she would wander round the place and only the new arrivals would bother to bark even!!
And of COURSE labs are intelligent...quite the most so.....now wait for the reaction....LOL LOL

24 Oct, 2009

Grrrrrr from Rosie and Meg:-)

24 Oct, 2009

My pair don't grrrrrr with lovely Russellers....LOL We meet a pair up on the disused golf course I usually walk on most mornings Bornagain - and what fun they all have!! They are quite the most enchanting little things and they run circles round my old blind girl and she adores it....especially when the male one takes a fancy to her.....:<<))))))

24 Oct, 2009

:-)

24 Oct, 2009

Terriers do love to play don't they Alz ?
Sorry, but I've only just found this ....... a VERY happy belated birthday to Henry !! xx

25 Oct, 2009

Thanks, Sue! He's lying in the sun again....what a life! Ahhhhhh!!!

25 Oct, 2009

So it's nice down your way as well ? Lovely bright morning here too !! Lovely, enjoy it while you can Henry !! :-))

25 Oct, 2009

:-)

25 Oct, 2009

We had yet another storm overnight but it has dried up and is just windy now....with the promise of some rain later..AGAIN!!
I 've forgotten what sunshine looks like!!!

25 Oct, 2009

Oh dear - sorry! It's clouded over now - rain on the way, I fear. Such a pain, as I was hoping to get outside this afternoon. I was in church when it was sunny!

25 Oct, 2009

Thank you Spritz......You must have put in a good word for us..somebody has just switched on a little sunlight right now.
A 40w bulb I fear - but better than nothing...LOL

25 Oct, 2009

Good... and it stopped drizzling here in time for me to get outside and do quite a lot before the darkness arrived! :-))

25 Oct, 2009

The bulb must have fused, Spritz....the rain is back!!!

25 Oct, 2009

That's OK - it's too dark out there, anyway. I hope you (and me!) get some better weather in the week ahead, though!

25 Oct, 2009

Sure do Spritz....more so for you really as I still can't do mutch ..but I think it is to stay very mild...but a bit damp up this way. Have a good week!!

25 Oct, 2009

Thanks, Alz. It's still nice for you to see some sun, though! Here's hoping....:-))

25 Oct, 2009

happy birthday Henry...Ruby Reggie and Blodwyn send woofs to you..;-))
we had a glorious morning but the rain has returned to Pembrokeshire better forcast for tommorow..;-))

26 Oct, 2009

Hi Spritz...We had an hour of sunshine this morning and it is back to gray again ...and just had a phone call from the top of Lochnagar (eek!) - to say it is misty and cloudy up there too!! My climbing mad son and partner couldn't resist nipping up a mountain as soon as the rain stopped apparently....exhausts me just to think about it...lol

26 Oct, 2009

Ooohh - no thanks! Walking Henry is enough for me!

It started off sunny and warm, but it's been drizzly here AGAIN since lunchtime. I just carried on, though. Am I a wimp? NO!! :-)) (just damp!) lol.

Ah-ha - did he find the old man up there? LOL.

26 Oct, 2009

I have to tell you its been an absolutely glorious day here in London, I was working in the sun and it was really hot. Cooled right down now ,though, as its dark already :-(

26 Oct, 2009

Did you absolutely HAVE to say that, Bamboo? Grrrr.....

26 Oct, 2009

I'm sorry, Spritz, but it was so lovely to be outside working in the sun (probably for the last time this year) that I just had to share it;-)

26 Oct, 2009

STOP it Bamboo....we are still under a cloud and squelching around our marshes - sorry lawns!!!

26 Oct, 2009

:-((

26 Oct, 2009

Please send some over here and up north as well! ;-))

26 Oct, 2009

It's on its way, according to the weather forecast I just saw.

26 Oct, 2009

Oooohh!! Can't wait! :-)))))))

26 Oct, 2009
