Treasures.

At this time of year, it’s wonderful to see flowers in my garden. We’ve had constant rain here, and it gets you down but to see flowers outside lifts my spirits.

Lonicera purpusii ‘Winter Fragrance’

I have a snowdrop out – the others are well on their way. It’s a sign of things to come.

As is the little choir-boy ruff round the first Aconite showing its head.

One of the early Narcissi is opening its trumpet bloom.

Narcissus ’Rijnveldt’s Early’

I’ve had Helleborus niger out for some time – it flowered before Christmas this year – but the next Hellebore in flower is early – and very welcome!

Helleborus x hybridus ‘Winter Moonbeam’

Another plant I wouldn’t be without in the winter months is a very different Hellebore. It has a horrible and rather unjust name!

Helleborus foetidus

I can’t detect an unpleasant smell, but I think if you crushed the flower, it might not be a good idea…

My real treasures are my winter-flowering Clematis – I have several, all a joy.

This is the most unusual one, I think – it took several years to flower. The flowers are small, so you have to get close to them to see how pretty they are.

Clematis napaulensis

I have three different Clematis cirrhosa plants. The first one is ‘Freckles’ which is very reliable. It also often produces a few flowers in summer!

Then in the back garden, I have ‘Wisley Cream’, which started to flower earlier, and mingled with Solanum laxum. It was wonderful looking at them from the back door. The Solanum has stopped flowering now, but ‘Wisley Cream’ most certainly hasn’t!

The third of the cirrhosas is my favourite one – it’s cascading down the front of the house, over an arch, so I see it every time I go to the side garden. It has never had so many flowers before!

Clematis cirrhosa var. balearica ‘Lansdowne Gem’

A long name, but such a wonderful Clematis I can’t resist showing you what it’s like with the sun shining through it.

Soon spring will come – the signs are here already. My Pulmonarias are coming into bloom.

Pulmonaria ‘Blue Ensign’

There are little promising shoots everywhere.

Just waiting to open with their treasure…

Like this – on February 4th last year!

What other treasures are there? Well, there’s gold a-plenty…

And pink, too.

I wouldn’t be without Viburnum tinus.

I’m not wishing my life away, but isn’t it wonderful to see treasures galore out there – and know there are many more to come? I have spring bulbs in every pot.

Wonderful treasure!

That cirrhosa on the arch is out of this world, glorious, it must have enjoyed all the rain. All you plants look wonderful and so full of promise:-))

I too could be accused of wishing time away Spritz as I go out to check every day and was very excited yesterday when I saw my Aconites in bud and the first little flowers showing on my Clematis, you have so many and its always a delight to see them..

A delightful blog Barbara, after seeing winter flowering clems, decided to order a few, because we realised we did not have one winter flowering!! shocking.....this morning we bought cirrhosa balearica, and this afternoon ordered Wisley Cream, Ourika Valley, Jingle Bells and Freckles.....I was very tempted by you beautiful Lansdowne Gem but it was rather expensive, so next year with a bit of luck will be able to enjoy their beauty......
So much going on in your garden despite the rain, such joy, now able to take a walk around the garden, thank goodness, not up to chores though....still slowly, slowly!!

It was so nice to read about your evergreen Clematis, Spritz. I know of a couple around here but I haven't seen nearly as many as the summer ones. Perhaps that because the summer ones are bigger & brighter & so attract more people's eyes. But I rather like these winter Clematis.

It was also lovely to see so many winter flowers! They all look wonderful!

i have a lot of Helleborus foetidus in my garden and i like the plant very much :-) it seems ideal for my garden as it is quite a big garden and this plant can grow to quite a considerable size, i was beginning to think that i might be the only soul person who had any.

lovely blog.

Thanks, everyone. It's lovely to have flowers out - I said before - they lift my spirit. :-)) I do agree, Lincslass - it's very exciting when you see little flowers popping up.

Lovely selection of colour there Barbara ... I love your 'choir-boy ruff round the Aconite' description ... and the Clematis are superb ... :o)

What a wonderful array of treasures you have to share with us. It's been a pleasure looking at them :)

What a lot of flowers you have so early I the year. I think things must be a bit farther on down in Somerset than in Surrey. I only have a few snowdrops at present & the Iris reticulate in bud. Thanks for sharing, all lovely.

Thanks, all. :-)) Feverfew, it's possible that we're a little ahead here, but most of my 'treasures' are winter flowering, so they're right on cue. :-)

Just so pretty and so encouraging to see so many beautiful flowers, all helps to pass on the winters dreary days. Love the clems. so pleased you are not stood under water this year, great to see so much appearing in your lovely garden. Things are not as far on here in Lincolnshire, but there are signs now of life beginning to return to the borders. Great blog with beautiful pictures thank you, it cheered me up no end seeing the plants in such lovely colour for you. I am so looking forward to spring it is only just around the corner, it is it is it is!!!!

22 Jan, 2014

Yes, it really is! I've noticed a slight lengthening of the days...which is so encouraging. Once January is over, my garden seems to know and there will be more treasures appearing, as there will be in Lincolnshire.

I'm glad you enjoyed my blog. :-)

I've just googled the very lovely Clematis cirrhosa var. balearica ‘Lansdowne Gem’ thinking it would be a fantastic sight through my patio window. Unfortunately, it needs winter protection here, so don't see how that would work?:-(

23 Jan, 2014

It isn't all that vulnerable, BA - if it's on a wall or facing South I think it'd be OK??? I suppose if you had an east wind whistling through it wouldn't appreciate that...but what would?

24 Jan, 2014

Ohhh thank you for this luverly blog SpritzH ....just what i needed this morning ...as i 've just posted my first blog about how miserable everything feels in this damp dreary weather :( Whata cheery soul i am ha ha!!
Yes you & your beautiful pictures have most definately lifted my spirits x

Just a joy to see. You have such a wonderful selection of winter flowering plants that must make wandering around your garden a true delight.

I' dont know how I missed your winter treasures Spritz. They are all gorgeous.

how are the water levels?? hope things don't get to stormy this weekend. :o)

Hello Barbara, haven't been on GoY for soo long. Lovely to see your garden again. Will have to come and see it for real again soon. I'm glad your c.napaulensis is doing so well. I bought Lansdown Gem last year but I dont think it's flowering yet. I think the smell of H.foetidus is when the root is crushed. Pam.

25 Jan, 2014

I missed this on too - really beautiful, and way ahead of gardens here. My iris are well up but no signs of flower buds yet, and Blue Ensign will be sent down to you shortly for some lessons. Your Wisley Cream is gorgeous. A lovely cheering blog, thank you.

25 Jan, 2014

You're very welcome. I was surprised and pleased when I took my camera round the garden! :-D

Pam, please do come and see us again - this might well be the last year I open it, as I'm struggling with my health atm. :-( Have to wait and see on that.

Lovely to see your Spring flowers bringing forth such pleasure after such a dreadful time last year. I shall have to go and have a closer look in my garden when it stops raining! I see the snow drops and the Helleborus foetidus but have not come accross any of my lovely helleborus yet, I must go and have a closer look, with such little time to get out there these days every minute I'm out I seem to be clearing the borders to help spot the bulbs. Glad to see your flood protection seems to be working. Well done you.

Thanks - and nice to see you! :-)

I have only just caught up with your garden treasures - just superb! I too grow C. Wisley Cream and had to cut the top back last week as it was growing into a lantern on the corner of house wall. I had to be really careful because there were quite a few bumblebees enjoying the flowers. Still masses of the white bells. I'm always surprised as during the year it can look quite dead and some years its been cut back really hard then come November and its lush again.

2 Mar, 2014

Yes, mine needs a good prune. I think it's almost finished flowering now. It does thrive on a cut back!

Lovely to see all the flowers in your garden in January. This year has been the most amazing for some of our plants that kept budding and blooming under a canopy all winter. Perlargoniums and fuchsias mainly. So they grew very large and are in full flower for many weeks. The mild temperatures, gales and all that rain/floods were disasters for many gardeners. In our garden they gave us a flowerfull spring never had while we have been here.

18 May, 2014

I have several tender plants that have survived, much to my surprise! A Senetti and three Nemesia in the back garden, as well as some in a pot. :-) My friend has a container of Pelargoniums in full bloom - last year's!!!
