Autumn colours - but not on the trees!

Autumn colours - but not on the trees!

It’s not only the leaves on the trees that change colour in the autumn. If you look down as well as up, you see some vivid colours – on unexpected plants, too. I didn’t expect to see a hardy geranium with red leaves!

And walking back across the bridge to the front door, I saw a sedum in the scree bed which has changed to red against the silver leaves of ‘Snow in Summer’. What a contrast they make!

In the back garden, too, there’s a different species of sedum, again changed to red, which is glowing, sun or no sun – in our area, no sun!

Back at the other end of the garden I noticed the colour of the Hosta leaves. Not red this time – they’ve changed to yellow. Another interesting contrast against the Lamium ‘Silver Beacon’.

Further up the border there’s a forsythia and its leaves are also changing to yellow before they fall.

I had some more leaves (yet more!) to rake up, so I went to fetch the rake – passing my clump of Geranium magnificum on the way. I have passed this many times today – it’s right by the path to the gate – but I hadn’t realised that its leaves, too, were changing colour.

Trees in the countryside and gardens are changing colour and looking wonderful, but look down as well as up – and like me, you may get some surprises!

Nice blog Spritz - certainly a pleasure to notice such things as gives another dimension to autumn. I have a small euonymous that is fairly pale and uninteresting until autumn when it changes to brilliant red.

Thank you for sharing .

You are so right Spritz, I love Summer with its blaze of vibrant colours, but my absolute favorite are the wonderful shades of Autumn, so warm. Brilliant Blog

Thanks for reminding us there's such a lot we can miss if we don't stop for a while and be observant.
I enjoyed these photos of autumn in your garden Spritzhenry.

Lovely photos.

Autumns can vary from one year to the next. We have a Liquidamber that failed to colour up last year but looks as though it will be a real show this year. The acers that were stunning last year are scorched with frost and snow this year.

Thanks, Spritz, will remember to look next time I'm out and about.

Thanks spritz, lovely blog and pics, I also love the changes to the hydrangeas, the colours fade and soften sort of shabby chique, or wabi-sabi lol

Thanks - What's wabi-sabi please, Tussie?
