More Rare Plants!

Exactly a year ago, I went to my first ever ‘Rare Plant Fair’ held at Wells, in Somerset.

You might remember my blog about it – it was a really good day, with a number of Nurseries selling some unusual plants – the prices were good, too.

This year, although there were fewer Nurseries – I suspect that the missing ones had been hit hard by the winter – I still managed to find some gems!

Hyacinthoides reverchonii

I’d never seen this little beauty before. It’s in my garden now!

I thought that you might appreciate having the dates and venues for this year’s Fairs. I’ll just type out brief details of the venues – if you want any more information, do please contact me, as I have the leaflet here.

3rd April – Brackley, Northants
10th April – Quenington,Gloucestershire
24th April – Syon House, London
1st May – Castle Bromwich Hall Gdns. Birmingham
8th May – Blagdon, N. Somerset
15th May – Princes Risborough
22nd May – Inner Temple Gdns. London
29th May – Kingston Bagpuize House, Oxfordshire
5th June – Lydart, Monmouth
12th June – Pewsey, Wiltshire
19th June – Newport, S. Wales
28th August – Chelwood, Bath, Somerset
18th Sept. Llanover, nr. Abergavenny, Wales.

Do go to one if you can – all the Fairs are held in large gardens, so you get to look round as well. You might even come back with a treasure for your garden, too!

Hi Spritz - thanks for the info - I like your plant photos particularly the tulipa.

Am glad you had a good time and found some plants that you don't already have in your garden.

I should have said that the Nurseries that go to the Fairs aren't usually open to the public. They tend to be specialist Nurseries, who probably sell by mail-order or at Fairs.

Going to one is a plant-lover's paradise! :-)

it sounds fascinating ~ do the plants tend to cost more at these fairs?

28 Mar, 2011

Tulipa turkestanica....love it, Spritz. These fairs, unfortunately, are too distant for me to attend but I will be able to get to ordinary plant fairs in our locality...I do wonder if hubby's wallet will withstand the shock!!

Thanks very much, Spritz . . . love the blue one. :)

I would break the bank for sure if I went to one of these. That tulip is amazing!!

It is, isn't it Karen. I got the last pot, too! The Nursery had brought quite a lot, but sold out very fast - I'd have bought more, if I'd seen them first.

Sticki - no, they're definitely cheaper - very good value. There aren't any overheads as there are at GCs, are there!

Hi Barbara \0/ I've been to the Castle Bromwich one, but not for many years. It's exciting going to any plant fair isn't it and usually cheaper too:-)

30 Mar, 2011

Anne - you'll need more info, so I'll send it to you. :-)

Yes, Ba - it definitely is cheaper -per plant. However, it depends on how many plants you buy, doesn't it! Heehee.

I just planted it in my garden - but it must have sun, and it really doesn't like heavy soils. It's hardy, and you can get bulbs in the autumn over here. I hope you can track them down in the USA. :-)
