Another Re-vamp.

Remember when I took the Cistus out and re-vamped the bed?

Well – it’s full of colour now – which made the smaller bed at the other side of the path look drab to say the least! What do you think, Henry?

It had more of those anonymous pink geraniums in it for a start. It was boring, to be honest. I decided to go for it – and try to plant it up in a similar way to the other side. I looked at what I could leave in, and what would need to come out – then started digging. I’ve been able to pull out the dead stems of the Byzantine gladioli since I worked on the first bed – you have to leave them until they pull out with a gentle tug, and they do look messy while they’re dying back.

I took the a.p.gs out of course. There are three Euonymus japonicus ‘Green Rocket’ in there, a Teucrium hircanum, a Nepeta, a Sedum and several other plants which could stay. It still left a lovely space to fill.

I found a rose which is pretty similar to ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ in the other bed – it’s called ‘Blue to You’.

I also planted Saponaria officinalis – I don’t mind if it spreads, it’s so much nicer than those awful pink geraniums!

I wanted to ‘echo’ the other bed, rather than have a copy of it, so I planted a different Penstemon – ‘Tayberry Ice’, and a smaller Salvia – ‘Blue Sensation’, from the top border..

There’s a Lythrum salicaria ‘Blush’ in the other bed, so I got one of those.

And a little hardy Diascia too.

I moved a clump of Leucanthemum ‘Aglaia’ across, and planted a Geranium ‘Jolly Bee’ to weave through the other plants, as it’s doing at the other side.

The new tiny Penstemon went in at the edge, too. It’s so small! A real mini-plant.

Penstemon ‘Minibird Lilac’

I’ve been meaning to plant autumn crocuses for years, and Colchicum, as well, so I bought a couple of packets.

I just had to have another Coreopsis ‘Limerock Passion’ in there…it adds so much to the bed. If we do happen to have a milder winter, they should survive, but I won’t hold my breath, I’ll just enjoy them for the moment.

Lastly, I tucked in some annual Angelonias from the greenhouse to fill the gaps.

So here’s the newly re-vamped bed! It’s looking so much better now. I don’t have to avert my eyes when I walk along the path now.

Fantastic garden. I love the pink coreopsis. i've never seen one before. Do they flower as well as the standard yellow ones?

31 Aug, 2010

Yes, but they're not as hardy, sadly.

Thanks, Anchorman. :-))

31 Aug, 2010

Very informative blog Spritzhenry.....Well done , and your garden looks great :-)

31 Aug, 2010

My coreopsises? flowered like mad all last summer, then died:-(

31 Aug, 2010

Thanks, Louis...that's very kind of you!

Ba - I managed to keep a C. rosea and another one...errr...pink with darker centres... and the Limerock ones are 'meant' to be hardy-ish, so it all depends on the temps now! We'll see....

31 Aug, 2010

Mine were limerocks, I just thought they'd flowered themselves to death:-(
