Hello!

I just bought 2 curry plants, one for the front gadren and one for the back one - do you know if the repels cats?

Feed it up to end of June but debatable as some say: "no later than end of July as late bursts of growth may cause new canes to be subject to winter damage due to vigor and late flourishes of growth, plus you get too much foliage."

It will fruit only on last year's canes, so over feeding usually will not benefit new cane, foliage growth as energy is going to flowers and berry formation. Some argue regular feeding for berries, I just give light feeds usually at this time!

Lucy,
Don't worry about the colour of the wrapping leaves which look purple(ish). It could be that you are growing the purple Zea mays which comes from Peru. In that case congratulations! I tried a couple of years ago and although the plant went to about 3 metres high, I didn't get any cobs.
The tassles going dry brown indicate that the cobs are ready to be picked.
Good luck (whenever you grew this).

superb!

Sorry I missed this question at the time, but perhaps this will help if you're planning to grow sweetcorn again this year. I have successfully grown it for the past two years, and this is what I do. About weeks before planting out, I rake some fish, blood and bone into the bed - and that's it. You can always repeat this some 6-8 weeks on, but I don't, as sweetcorn has shallow roots, which I wouldn't want to disturb. All they need is plenty of plain water in dry spells and, hopefully, plenty of sunshine.

Hello.
I tried a very small number of corn plants for 1st time this year, but they've done badly, and I wonder if it's just due to the rubbish weather we've had? I think they'd prefer much more sun.

The rain this year has been a nightmare for arable farmers. Their crops are poor, much of it is having to be used for animal feed.

The Opium Poppies are annuals and the plants die once seed is ripe. . They will certrainly seed themselves, but keep some seed for sowing next Spring to make sure it is where you want them, because they do not transplant satisfactoraly. What wonderful Pepper pots they make.

Poppys are the best self seeders, reserve a little space for them.

I just leave ours to seed or harvest the pods and sprinkle teh seed else where in the garden...then cut the pods down to the ground...The should come back for you next year...ours do...

I agree Sodapop, I would love to drive a combine harvester or big tractor.

wow what wonderful acers. Do you think that they are better in pots i have several and have put them straight into the ground. Hopefully they will look as lush as yours one day. Any handy tips would be great. In my old garden i had a lovely red feathery leaved one and my puppy decided to try and jump it and split it nearly in half. When i moved i gave it to my friend and it now looks wonderful with the split in it, i was amazed it survived.

What's going to work? - Teamwork!" Our children forever sing the signature tune from the kids' programme "Wonderpets". Your comment, Terratoonie, reveals that real wildlife uses this technique very well.

That's an interesting idea, Andrewr. Thanks !

In my garden this summer, when the thrush parents were feeding their fledglings, they displayed amazingly well-coordinated team-work, taking turns in smashing up snails to give to their young. One thrush would have a bash, and then the other would take over. Good parenting !

I found that throwing snails up on to the garage roof has encouraged thrushes into my garden. Those snails that don't get eaten get fried if we get any hot weather

wow how great!!!
