That's very disheartening for you :( but we live and learn, so I hope using the enviro mesh will be successful next year ...

Oh I hate it when that happens Steve, you feel as though you've wasted time, energy and also money on occasions, I only grow a few carrots in tubs now as even if they do actually grow in my ground they get always get attacked...

Good luck next year with the carrots, Steve.

Hi Steve, what rotten luck, have you tried growing them in beds raised 2 ft off the ground, I believe the flies can go no higher than 18", so a 2ft high bed would be too high for them, Derek.

Thats right Derek. Also find your local chimney sweep.
They are very busy just now. Get a few bags of soot ready for next spring.

I've read that erecting a two foot barrier round the outside of the bed works too. One way or another you'll get the better of the little blighters next year!

I remember seeing trials on Beechgrove Garden a few years back that did exactly as Derek advises Steve.
I noticed my neighbour Jim had his in raised beds with nets around them this year too.

thank you all for replies afraid raised beds not an option too many you see it would take up too much ground to fit them in and make rotation difficult thanks for reading steve

The sweep option is the best.
