Blackbird Overload.

Our garden is only small as I have previously mentioned, not enough room for all the plants I would like to grow.. I also think there are more Blackbirds than the area can support, without conflict. We are unable to decide who belongs with whom. There is Mr Stumpy, he has absolutely no tail, prone to fighting with the male we assume to be dominant. Females all look similar, so not sure how many there are. They started building very early, causing a nuisance by taking damp soil from my pots of seedlings. The first nest I discovered was when I put my head into my open fronted lean-to. There were 4 eggs laid, but she abandoned them and built another nest in the Rosemary, laid a couple of eggs, then started again in the Hypericum on the back fence, then again against the bungalow wall on the Raspberry canes. Or maybe there were more than one female. The youngsters from this last nest fledged recently.
Now Mrs Blackbird is on the lookout for a new site for a nest.

What a stupid place to build a nest. ….against the down pipe between the two conservatory windows. I think she thinks if she looks out toward the garden, she can’t be seen from the inside. OH thinks it was well chosen, under the gutter, sheltered from the sun and rain.

We wonder if she will continue with this nest as we use the conservatory constantly, all meals in there during the summer months.

They nest in the stupidest places. One tries to nest in our log store every year. Another? one tried out the viburnum tinus right at my back door this spring. Every time I went out it nearly gave me a heart attack! Lol!

Obviously blackbirds are a bit dim.....methinks. At least you have some birds though!! so it cannot be all bad!

We have quite a selection of birds on the feeders - and quite a lot of blackbirds - and they do like sultanas - I have a dish on the table on the decking and they sit on the decking railings in a morning and watch for me in the kitchen - they have brought several young fledglings for sultanas - part of their training programme I think - Jane

Dim and stupid. OH says if she raises young, he is going to film them from inside the conservatory, when she goes to collect food.
Jane. We tend not to put food on the bird table after we saw a rat on it, hanging from the platform by its back legs to try to get at the peanut holder.

The photo was taken from the garden side. I looked in the nest through the glass when she went for some food, saw at least 3 eggs. Thanks Paul, I did see your blog.
