A bigger job than I intended!

A couple of weeks ago I divided the water plants in the top pond. The next job was to weed out the Bluebells and Gladiolus papillio that had infested the rock garden between the top pond and the small one, impossible to remove without the soil falling into the water.
This is the small pond in early Spring this year.

And late Spring this year.

I decided to lift the pond and move it forward, creating more growing space at the back. Then I decided to rotate it by 180o. This involved a lot of digging and refilling where the shelf was. The soil underneath was awful, so much compost was added. Then it rained in torrents and the soil became impossible to work.

All the Snakes’ Head Fritillaries are now in pots, till I can improve the soil. Also I had to dig up my 2 Californian Iris, (innominata I think) although really October is the time to do it, when they have made new roots. The blue one has no new roots, I hope I don’t lose it.

A work in progress. The shelf I have decided to use completely for bog loving plants.

OH made me a little bridge.
I can now dig out the offending bulbs and plant up the extra space behind the pond.

I have put up a reminder for myself to divide my Dierama with red flowers in spring, as it is totally congested and not flowering well, and place it on the top of the rock garden.
I will show you the area next year.

My sentiments exactly (the bridge) looking forward to seeing this work in progress!!

No Amy, I didn't have a Manuel to do the work, I did it all myself, except building the bridge. The duck is one of my £1 shop purchases, have 2 Otters and a Woodpecker, sad isn't it!!! There are, however, real Newts and Frogs in the ponds.

Sorry Sue I made a mistake in the spelling of manuel it should have read manual as in hard manual labour not a ref.book .. I still think the duck looks real ,I'm amazed at what you can buy at the pound shop I often go in for one item and come out with 5 ....

Amy, Manuel was a joke as in Faulty Towers!
Steragram OH is indeed handy, but doesn't like or do gardening. He made some 'pit props' today because my apple trees are leaning.
Thank you Dan and Diane, I am pleased with the results so far.

Might have been hard going but its a job well done and worth all the hard graft, it will look a treat next spring time, my hubby also dislikes gardening and I hate having to ask him to help me, I cannot wait for next year when I can get my mowing job back again and also do a bit of sorting and thinning out around my garden, lots of pruning jobs also put on hold until next year...I do like the bridge so hubby is awarded a pat on his back for that, lol...

Looks like a lot of hard work Siris. I would love a pond but my garden at the back is in a slope and my husband doesn't want goldfish in the sitting room each time we have heavy rain.
