An Autumnal walk

On Monday, a fine and sunny day, we drove to Arundel, parked up and then walked alongside the stream near to the castle.

There was a fairly deep covering of fallen leaves on the ground, enough for me to ‘scrunch’ my way through!

The water was looking quite cloudy and it was obvious the embankment had been severely cut back recently.

The further we walked on, the more there was a pungent smell in the air. It wasn’t too pleasant, but soon we found the cause of it.

A machine was dredging the silt and weed from the bottom of the stream, then discharging it on the woodland at the side.

We continued walking along to Swanbourne Lake, a place my family have been visiting for years and years!

This is how it looked in early October last year …

and how it looked on Monday …

We soon realised why so many birds were gathering here …

A young man was feeding them, some taking the food directly from his gloved hands so I guess he’s a regular visitor to the lake.

Time to walk back to Arundel for a warming coffee … lovely views of the surrounding South Downs and countryside.

and plenty more fallen leaves to ‘scrunch’ through.

Thanks in advance for joining in the Autumnal walk.

Being as it is so near us, I am ashamed to admit we have never visited.........our son in law suggested we should go,!

Lovely walk Shirley! Dotty - if you plan entering the castle, some research would be a good idea . . . we took all the family in June this year, and it cost a fortune even though several parts were closed. Interesting visit though :)

I like scrunching thro' leaves, the pavements at the end of the road are so covered in leaves at present, you can't see where the path ends and the grass verge begins.

The castle and scenery was beautiful :)
Can't say the same about the birds lol.

What a beautiful place....One day I would really love to tour the southern counties. I have been to Hastings, passed through Plymouth, and stayed in Devon and Cornwall. But I would love to go to Dorset and Hampshire...and places like this...and the New Forest...so many lovely places I've never been.....sigh.

Don't forget West Wales Karen. Coastal path in May is something you'd never forget.

We stopped off in Arundel last year,Shirley..I think it was the day before,or the day after we met up with you and Michael, when you kindly came to take us out for the afternoon ?We also walked a little way on that path..such a lovely place..Sadly,there was no time to look around the Castle, but we did, many years ago..I would love to revisit again though, and have plenty of time to do so...you are lucky to be so near to places like this,,thanks for sharing :o) x

Many thanks for all the lovely comments. I agree that entrance fees to Arundel Castle are over-priced, but can recommend visiting The Collector Earl's Gardens, included in the price.

A boat trip on the River Arun, if the weather is fine, is a lovely thing to do, glorious views along the way.

Karen, I have to tell you that my OH is often saying how he wants to take me to Scotland! He regularly visited when he was in the retail trade and just loved your part of the British Isles!

Sandra, don't you find that when places of interest are so close to where you live, you don't visit them often? There is a lot on offer in West Sussex, I have yet to see it all!

Thanks Sbg ... in our local newspaper this week they say that Arundel Castle is the most popular attraction in West Sussex ... with Brighton Royal Pavilion the second one.

Yes indeed Sandra!

Gg, thanks for looking in.
