Highdown Gardens February 2016

Some members will already know that these gardens are a favourite of mine … there are a few blogs over the years!

OH and I took a stroll around them today as storm Imogen had passed through a couple of days earlier … apart from a few small branches and twigs on the ground we could see no damage.

The Spring flowers are budding up … some are flowering already.

Crocus

Snowflake

Euphorbia

Anemones

Blossom in pink and white

Hellebores

Copious amounts of this was being forked in and around the borders … these gardens are chalk and obviously benefit from some farmyard manure!

The ponds appear to have been cleared of debris and the surrounding plants cut back.

I guess the white Fungus is not a problem on this branch … I have not seen this before.

Spring scenes with Hellebores/Daffodils/Snowflake and Crocus.

Another year of gardening begins … thanks for reading.

Hi Shirley! Its me, in the GC again as still no phone line. I loved your blog. Those tommie crocuses are so beautiful, I really far prefer them to any of the hybrids, and they flower so early too! I have pink blossom on my prunus subhirtella autumnalis...another favourite of mine. Its so lovely to see all these spring blooms...cheers you right up! :) thanks!

Oh Karen, still no phone line up and running yet? Not good enough is it? We really did enjoy the walk around ... another fortnight and all will be in bloom I would imagine!

Pam, so nice to have a dry and calm day after the windy weather of late.

Thanks Kathy and Hb ... :o))

I can easily see why you love it there.
Early spring flowers take some beating I think, and are truly lovely.

Sometimes there's more pleasure in scenes like those than in more formal plantings - all so relaxing and lovely. I agree with Karen about the species crocus, they are so frail looking and dainty.

Chris, our family have been visiting these gardens since I was a child, many moons ago!

Stera, I know what you mean and to think these gardens were started in 1910 from a bare chalk pit on the Sussex Downs. :o)

A really Lovely Spring garden, certainly lifted my spirits.....

Its a lovely place Shirley and can see why you keep going back, I like the natural look especially in the springtime, I do like to see formal beds and borders in some places but somehow to my way of thinking our spring flowers should be allowed to naturalize and do their own thing... Your photo's are lovely thankyou for sharing your walk....

Thanks Hywel, Dotty ... raining today. :o(

Hi Sue, hope you're feeling good today? I know just what you mean about the informal planting, to see Crocus and Daffs just springing up under trees and shrubs is nicer than the 'Parks & Depts.' style of planting!

I am doing very well thanks Shirley, find it hard to walk any distance without my legs aching and my body complaining but I am fine around my house and garden, everything gets done in short bursts of energy, lol......

Good to hear that Sue ... steady and slow does it!

I can't say as I know this place Shirley, but I'm not surprised you love it, it's delightful. Everything looks so natural, not really planted at all. Thanks for sharing your visit and taking the photos. :-)
