Some colour at last!

I must begin by wishing all GoYers a very happy new year, with hopes for good gardening weather in 2013 wherever you may be in the world. Some folk have seen floods, others drought and even more have had to contend with totally unseasonal weather throughout 2012.

Down here on the South coast we have had rainy days far too often, definitely not enough blue sky and sunshine!

I think 2012 was the year I spent the least time in my garden, mainly due to the saturated soil, partly due to my health issues. I hope to have a Cardiac procedure in the next couple of months which should help quell the “Slow, slow, quick, quick, slow” my heart rate does at the moment!

So, here is a little bit of colour from my garden in January 2013 … so good to see some at last after the dreary Winter months.

I was so pleased to see this Hellebore orientalis spotted hybrid has opened up … even though it’s facing away from view!

Lovely red berries on the Ilex altaclerensis ‘Golden King’ A female one despite the name!

These orange berries on the Pyracantha have been stripped from the top couple of feet!

Thank goodness for Euonymous ‘Emerald ’n Gold’ as it brightens up a dull day

Now this Viburnum can be seen from the kitchen window … and the Blackbirds and Robins love to forage beneath it … makes washing up less of a chore!

These are the first Daffodils to open up in the back garden … many others are showing their foliage too … not long now until Spring is here!

How this Hebe keeps flowering I really don’t know … it’s barely been without a bloom all of 2012 and just keeps going

The Coprosma ‘Pacific Sunset’ are happy in the blue pots by the front door … and the little Violas just need dead-heading occasionally

Here’s hoping for a really great gardening year!

what a beautiful colourful blog, I can't get over those daffodils, and I came in bragging today that ours are peeking through the soil.

Lots of winter pleasure out there to see. The sight of daffodils so early in the year is a real bonus under the grey skies. I like the pansies too.

Happy New Year Shirley, and good luck with your health in the coming years :o)

It's very uplifting to see flowers opening so early. I't been very mild and I hope it lasts.

Nice to see Ellora. She looks very contented :o)

New Year wishes from me too Shirley.
You've certainly got a good bit of colour going on there. I do like that holly - one I might add to my never ending list!!
Hope all goes well with your forthcoming procedure and your recovery gets you back on track.
What a gorgeous wee girl Ellora is!

A lovely welcoming sight Shirley, my daffs are only just showing a few tiny tips,(envy showing) your viola`s are gorgeous as well, I do have some Hellebores in flower though, I have a Pyracantha growing on my bottom raised bed but it has never produced any berries although its growing quite well....
I hope you get your cardiac procedure asap as I should imagine it can be quite scary as it is at the moment, my neighbour has a similar problem and we often see the ambulance outside as her daughter gets panicky and dials for the paramedics
Lovely photo`s Shirley, of course the best one has to be Ellora and proud daddy, I wish you and yours Best Wishes for 2013, we must be in line for some sunshine along the way xx.

Happy New year Shirley and I hope all goes well for your operation. Lovely colour in the garden too! No sign of any daffs. yet in mine!

Lol, Yorks, I'm pretty sure that bunch of Daffs always bloom before the others ... perhaps I fed them really well once upon a time!

Thanks Wildrose, it won't be long before you have hedgerows full of Daffs ...

Thanks for your comments, Hywel, you been on the cucumber ... lol!

Sandra, PM on the way, honest! ... :o)))

Scottish, I was so glad to be able to take a look at what's flowering today as we've had two whole days without heavy rain ... woohoo!

Hi Lincs, I spent 24hrs. in hospital just before Christmas with chest pains again ... shall we just say the wheels turn slowly with regard to Cardiac procedures ... it's almost a year ago since I had the heart attack ... where has the time gone?

Sbg, isn't it good to see just a little bit of colour again? ... You can tell I dislike the Winter months!

Happy new year to you and yours Rose ... since posting this blog I've noticed a few buds on the Snowdrops too ... what a very odd season!

Sorry to hear that Shirley, its awful having to wait whilst one is suffering, especially when used to being so active normally and lets face it we never really had many cheery days to help along the way,the year seemed to drag along sometimes yet disappeared so quickly in other ways, my mum used to say time flies when we are having fun, haven`t yet made up my mind whether thats right or not, you keep your spirits up and stay healthy in other ways........

My friends near you sent a photo at christmas of daffs out in Hove Park!
Sorry to hear you need a 'little tweak 'to sort your rhythm,
fingers crossed for you

As to Ellora's pretty eyes showing red I was once told that its a sign of healthy eyes

You certainly aren't alone! Do please let us know how you are. As you know, I KNOW what it's like.

Thanks for the lovely blog - I wish my Narcissi were in flower - I planted some Rijnfeldt's Early in the autumn, and they're just in bud now.

I thank each and every one of you for your lovely comments ... today I noticed a flower on a neighbour's tall Kerria shrub ... lovely bright yellow against a dull, grey sky and a few blooms on one of the very early flowering Cherry trees along the road ... another Spring begins! ... :o)

Hi Lulu, my OH has just been listening to the footie on Radio 5Live ... shame about the score ... :o(

Apparently Ellora was the name of the baby in the film 'Willow' ... and d-in-law fell in love with the name. I'm waiting on an appointment letter for the cardiac procedure ... just hoping it arrives soon!

Today I noticed huge buds on a Rhododendron in a front garden along the street ... here's hoping for the mild weather to continue ... :o)

7 Jan, 2013

My OH is well chuffed being an Everton fan!
Just hope that after all this wet weather we have had enough of a frost to kill of the bugs...But looking forward to the Rhodos in Westonbirt!
I went into hospital a couple of weeks before Christmas and got the letter today!! Hope yours comes soon. x

Lovely blog, Shirley. Do you leave your coprosma out all year? I lug mine into the greenhouse because I thought it was tender! It would be much easier to leave it in place. I love your little Ellora flower, growing well, bless her :)

10 Jan, 2013

Ah Lulu ... I thought your OH was cheering for Cheltenham, not The Toffeemen, no wonder he was pleased!

Thanks Dotty ... nothing but rain and more rain today, probably the same where you are ... :o(

Gee ... both pots have a Coprosma in ... each year I tell OH I need something for the pots through Winter, afterwards I plant them out in the Spring to the garden! So the answer to your question is 'Yes' but this is their first year ... the porch faces South but is not enclosed (does that make sense?) so last year the Hebes in the pots thrived and the previous year the Osmanthus fared well too ... all now planted in the garden.

Ellora is looking cute ...
