A sunny week away.

We have just spent a wonderful week near Bude, NW Cornwall, where we stayed in a pine lodge overlooking some fishing lakes, with just the sounds of birds and other wildlife. No traffic noise, the quiet of the whole place was fabulous and so very relaxing.

Having changed my meds., on the advice of the Cardiac Nurse the previous week, I had more energy and stamina than of late, just a shame I still need further tests to establish how the heart condition can be controlled, no need to dwell on that though.

We set off to the West Country, sun was shining and the sky was a clear blue, little did we know it would remain that way for the entire week! How lucky we were not to have had a drop of rain.

Our first ‘comfort break’ was at a GC on the outskirts of Salisbury, the one where I bought my David Austin rose for a fiver last year and one I think Cinderella visits. She may have seen this Pheasant loitering around the outdoor tables, quite a change from the usual GC adopted cat! It took scone crumbs from our hands, certainly a ‘first’ for OH to feed a Pheasant.

We don’t have Satnav in the car as ‘Shirlnav’ is just as efficient and much cheaper … that’s me with a map book on my lap as navigator! Nothing tests your patience more than being stuck behind one of these on a narrow track … and before you ask … we were not lost!

One of many red telephone kiosks in the area … few and far between where we live

After driving just over 200 miles, with two comfort breaks, we arrived at our destination … pretty good views too

Oh my goodness … there’s another Pheasant! … Turns out this one always appears when new guests arrive … very intelligent bird

Having unpacked the cases and put the food away, we walked around a couple of the five fishing lakes and came back to find another visitor waiting for some food

Port Isaac was a huge disappointment, litter on the ground and overflowing bins put us off having our lunch there and the endless references to the filming of the TV series ‘Doc Martin’ on advertising boards was too much! If any GoYers are thinking of visiting Port Isaac, be prepared for a long uphill walk back to the car park on the outskirts of the village … and pack a picnic unless you really want to pay over the top for refreshment!

Lovely West Country views driving from one place to another … love the way the trees lean to one side from the effects of the winds from the Atlantic Ocean

We drove up to Hartland Point, which is a 325ft. (99m) high rocky outcrop of land on the NW tip of the Devon coast. The point marks the Western limit (on the English side) of the Bristol Channel with the Atlantic Ocean continuing to the West. There is a £2 toll to be paid for entry to the car parks and, if like me, you’re a passenger with no head for heights, best to look up on the drive down!

The coastal town of Bude was about seven miles from our holiday base and we visited there twice … lovely just to sit with a coffee and watch the surfers … and dream of living in a cottage overlooking the water … sigh!

Clovelly is well visited by tourists, but we preferred the small village of Bucks Mills, close by and in the parish of the wonderfully named Woolfardisworthy. A stream runs through the village and can be heard trickling its way down to the sea throughout the walk downhill. I was unable to walk right down to the sea, mainly due to the effort of walking back uphill to the village, but enjoyed the view anyway.

The stream runs behind the stone wall in the bottom left of the photo above

We also visited RHS Rosemoor, Docton Mill Gardens (the place I fell in love with last year!) and Tintagel but they’re blogs for another day. Shall just finish with this photo of a beautiful country cottage.

Thanks for reading this holiday blog.

Great blog Shirley. You certainly visited some beautiful places. Who needs to go abroad when we have such wonderful places right here.
A friend of mine went to Port Isaac & thought the same as you, but when she went they were filming & it was so busy.
Glad your feeling better, lets hope these meds are the way to go :-)

Beautiful! Shame about Port Isaac - and, once again, the litter louts! And probably the 'Litter Council' failing to empty bins on a more regular basis during tourist season!

3 Aug, 2012

True Nariz whats the point of a bin if they don't empty it!

Shirley it looks a lovely area and what luck for you to pick the only sunny week!
Its not an area that I know but it looks lovely, my cousin stay in the lodge type of accommodation when they can, they are always nice

I,m so very pleased that you are feeling better now the meds have been sorted,. xxx

What a lovely place, I would just love to go again, but the travelling is probably too much for my hubby. Aren't you lucky getting the lovely weather too, must have known you were coming! Lol. I'm glad you enjoyed your rest and hope you stay well.

Thankyou all so much for your lovely comments .... it really couldn't have been better with the sunshine ... and the meals eaten 'al fresco' all helped to make it a great holiday. Back to reality now ... weeds on the plot and in the garden to remove ... :o(

Next time you come to the Wilton Garden Centre let me know and I will meet you there.

What a fantastic area Shirley and so well photographed ....very professional. I'm useless at geography and must confess I had no idea where Bude was! Now I would love to visit. Isn't it lovely when 'wild' animals are so trusting? Lets hope there are no shoots arranged close by. I'm not sure I'd like to live in that house with the stream so close fantastic though it was, I'll have to settle for the lovely thatched one :-) So pleased they seem to have got your meds sorted, I suppose, as we're all different, it's a matter of trial and error. Lovely to see you back on form:-))

I'm glad you had a nice holiday in such a beautiful place. I hope you feel better for it.
I haven't got satnav, and never will. I enjoy planning my own route.

Lovely blog, Shirley. Thanks for taking us on holiday with you. The British Isles are truly beautiful, especially when the sun shines. Hope the relaxation has done you good.

Cinders, it's a deal, although you may have to wait until next year! ... :o)

Ba, thankyou so much for your complimentary comments! ... The photos are just using a cheap digital camera ... if only you knew how many have been deleted ... lol! ... I was sad to hear that the area close to where we stayed had been affected by flooding over the weekend ... we certainly were fortunate with our sunny week there ... :o)

Hywel, I quite like navigating with the use of a map book ... it shows all the places of interest ... unlike a Satnav voice! .......

T'bear ... pleased you enjoyed the holiday too! ... There is so much of Great Britain I have yet to see ... but it's lovely to 'see' so many places through the GoY site .. :o)
