Shades of Nigella

*Not the cook, but the lovely ‘cottagey plant’ Nigella damascena, otherwise called ‘Love-in-a-mist’.

I was given a handful of these plants from my daughter-in-laws Mum a couple of years ago, and she told me that once you’ve got them in the garden, you’ll have them forever!

They belong to the Buttercup family (Ranunculaceae) and will last for about a week if you cut some for a vase indoors. The flowers form inflated seed pods, useful in dried arrangements. I love the different shades and am hoping to sow seeds of pink ones for future years.

I believe many have appeared around my garden from the home made compost . . . not that I’m complaining!*

I love them and have lots, all were blue last year but are white now, not a single blue anywhere, I like to put mine in a vase with sweetpeas.....

How lovely to have them change colour! I think I'm regressing to my dear old Nan's gardening days, as her garden was full of these, together with Pinks and lots of tall Daisies, all of which I have in my own garden now! I like the idea of putting them with Sweet Peas in a vase too. : o ))

You wont regret it ladybug, every year when the seeds set I sprinkle them around the garden, any I dont want go in the compost so not wasted.

I put some in a patio pot last year and the're filling out nicely--- cheaper -and easier- than too much bedding out!
