At last, we have rain . . .

*We have waited such a very long time for a decent downpour of rain here on the South coast, about three months I think. Today, it has arrived, and it’s a constant rainfall, not a five minute shower!

This is great news for our garden and allotment, but sad news for our village, as it’s the start of the 30th year of Village Festival week. This afternoon is the Tug o’ War, a cricket friendly match and, at 6pm, the festival songs of praise where you are requested to bring a blanket or chair to sit on.

Oh dear, it’s more a case of bring a brolly and a waterproof coat!

I have put out some buckets and trugs for the rain to fall into, and perhaps our new second water butt will get a christening at last.

Never thought I would be so pleased to say it’s raining.
Even the Hydrangeas are happy!*

This sure is brilliant news Shirley we've waited long enough, hopefully the lawn will green up again. The birds are also pleased pecking alsorts out the lawn....

Lucky you Shirley.... its just dull here with a bit of drizzle now and then... we had a bit of rain in the night but it hasnt even wet the ground... maybe its on its way here..lol

The Festival Committee must be so disappointed with the rain, Cinders, having been a dry area here for so long. : o ((

It's been a long wait for rain, Stripes. It even smells good ... lol! : o )

Holly, I do hope it falls on your garden too, think of all those pots you won't have to water ... lol!

yes i cant wait for it... but it just keeps passing us by.: o)

glad you finally have rain, its pouring down in Swindon so my daughter just told me,

Perhaps I got too excited ... just gone out to close the garage door and it's just spits & spots again. : o (((

Oh no, sorry about that, sun shining here but still windy

5 Jun, 2011

Good job its not St.Swithins day!!! Although we are desperate for rain, here in the SE. we have had just 'spits' not nearly enough to do good. Your Hydrangea is just gorgeous Shirley, such a lovely colour.

I really thought the rain was here for the rest of the day, almost stopped now. Sadly, that Hydrangea is not in my own garden, Gm. : o ((

We actually had a really good downpour in the week, (overnight, too!) and never thought we'd be so pleased to see it. The lawn greened up in no time, but now we're back to watering stuff. It's really bad luck for your festival though, after so many weeks of fine weather. :(

THought youd sent it here shirley.. as it got a bit heavier, but only for a couple of mins.... just dull now.. still i wont have to ge tthe hose out tonight...

5 Jun, 2011

Can you send the rain this way Shirley, I keep looking out the window i'ts very grey looking but no rain yet.

5 Jun, 2011

We have had a chilly, quite windy day, been overcast for hours but no rain, we did get a full day about 10 days back and it was surprising how quickly everything perked up including the lawn so hopefully that will be the same in your area Shirley, no matter how often we water it never works the same as a good rainfall and I have to agree with you about the smell...
Typical that it has picked your Festival Week, hopefully it will allow you some good days as well for the rest of the celebrations...

Although I can appreciate how grateful you were for the rain I hope it didn`t spoil the village festival.

Sheila & Stroller, the Village Festival events began yesterday and continue through the week, finishing with the Carnival Procession next Saturday so there's plenty of time for fund-raising! There are Open Gardens too ... : o ))

Holly & Teds, it's started again, a very fine drizzle, so I hope it reaches you through the night. Fingers crossed. : o )

Lincs, I've been standing by the open back door watching the birds, and Sid Squirrel, enjoying the rainfall. Lovely to see it. : o )

That sounds lovely...the rain....the village festival...the bird and squirrel watching...ah, I miss old Englandshire some days! btw Shirley, it is about 10 degrees with a real feel....get this...no kidding...of THREE DEGREES!!. We have very grey skies and no rain at all save a spit spot at about 6pm....worst of both worlds! Only good thing is, it's not very windy!! :((((

Oh dear, Karen, I don't think I'd like that at all. Tomorrow is forecast to be sunny periods with a high of 15 degrees. Believe it or not, with the constant drizzly rain today, the slugs are out in force now. Just took Mum back home and they're munching their way through the Marigolds. Guess who stayed for ten minutes sprinkling blue pellets around? : o (((

5 Jun, 2011

Oh oh! No, Shirley you wouldn't like it at all.....no sensible human being would like it!

5 Jun, 2011

How does this sound to you, Karen? As part of our Village Festival celebrations tomorrow, at 7.30pm, "Poetry & Pimms" - a convivial evening of Poetry and a FREE Pimms. Admission £2.50. Also, Sunday afternoon ... "Pimms on the Green" ... quick ... get down here ... lol!

5 Jun, 2011

As soon as I saw it was raining in earnest here, I thought of you and hoped you were getting some too Shirley! Who'd have thought we'd all be going into raptures about a bit of rain LOL.
Such a shame about the village fete, bad timing for us too with a big family gathering at my daughters for baby's first birthday. We were meant to be spending it in her newly made over garden :o(( Never mind she won't have to water her new lawn tonight.

5 Jun, 2011

Ha ha, Lily! There are strange things in the road, I think they're called puddles if memory serves correctly!! Just been out to look at the grass, sparkling with rain and can hear it falling into the buckets & trugs I put out in readiness. What a pity it rained for your family gathering though, I hope it didn't spoil the first birthday celebrations too much.

What a beautiful Hydrangea! So glad that you have some water at last, but hope it doesn't go to extremes.

Thank you for your comments:it was clearly you who asked about the Penstemon and I do apologise for forgetting you:was a bit preoccupied at the time.

I shall try and keep up with things from now on and shall look forward to following your blogs.

Sadly, very very sadly, I am currently alcohol-free! But yes, I would have loved that so much!!

6 Jun, 2011

Felinfan, I'm not sure if I did ask about the Penstemon, or whether is was Sanbaz! I'm not trawling back through to find out, this site can be so very slow at times, like it is today at 09.30! The drizzle has ensured the water butt is almost filled to the top, hooray!

Karen, that's a shame for you. : o ((

6 Jun, 2011

Oh no, Karen, that means you won't be coming to see our garden next Sunday, when OH will be serving Pimm's. How long have you got to stay off the booze, you poor girl?!

6 Jun, 2011

yup, I'm on the wagon! lol....I've pmd you shelia! x

6 Jun, 2011

The rain reached us last night shirley and weve had quite a good soaking.. hooray..... so no hose out tonight thank goodness...: O ))

6 Jun, 2011

Well, the water butt is filled but the soil is only wet for about two inches down. Every little helps . . . .

6 Jun, 2011

it sure does.... it will take quite a bit to soak through the soil wont it.....

6 Jun, 2011

I think we're due for some more rain on Wednesday ... then again I don't think the forecast is often right!

6 Jun, 2011

Our weather forecast for the week ahead is for cold and showers so not sure if we will need to water the new turf daily or not...take it as it comes. Sure not looking forward to the metered water bill!!

I hope those who need the rain will find it gets to them. It doesn't seem to travel far enough south for everyone unfortunately.

6 Jun, 2011

no... windy again today....

7 Jun, 2011

7 Jun, 2011
