There's Greenfly & Blackfly, but now Brownfly???

I looked at the blooms on my Rose ‘Golden Showers’ earlier on this evening and thought they were looking a bit ‘tatty’!

One opening bud had obviously been, or was being, nibbled at by something, so I carefully opened up the petals to find this . . .

No, not the coin, the tiniest caterpillar, happily feeding on the petals. Then I looked at some of the closed Rosebuds to find these . . .

There are some Greenfly, but the majority appear to be brown, so are Greenfly juveniles brown at birth, turning green as they age? I realise you’ll think I’m completely mad now, but they honestly are brown! . . .

I’ve sprayed the little bugs with soapy water as I don’t like using chemicals, there’s no rain to wash them off and even the birds don’t want them. That tiny Caterpillar is no longer around so I just hope the bugs respond to the soapy water treatment overnight as I really like my ‘Golden Showers’ rose . . .

Oh dear..not seen those before..I'm sure soapy water should help,Shirley..I hope you find out what they are..if they are 'baddies' I use an organic,Garlic barrier spray..and that helps a lot.it also feeds the foliage..and its also safe on fruit and veg ..just a thought,if they persist..

I hope the soapy water works - I know it's horrible, but using your fingers in a rubber /disposable glove is also effective if you don't want to spray your lovely rose. Where are the ladybirds when you need them?

Its a lovely rose so I do hope your treatment works Shirley, I don`t like to use the sprays because of my fishpond, I`ve started planting lavender near my roses and it does seem to deter the greenfly away from the ones its near....

Sorry you have rain, Joan, just send it down to us as we're becoming a drought area down here! The new water butt we've connected to the first one hasn't seen a drop so far. I always thought Nasturtiums were a good 'Companion Plant' to deter aphids? I'll need to check on it now. : o (

Where do you buy the Garlic barrier spray from, Sandra? It sounds ideal for me to use. : o )

Spritz, the arbour in the centre border was covered in Ladybirds about three weeks ago! If only I had a crystal ball, I'd have moved them over to the Rose! Sounds like Latex gloves may have to be donned if all else fails .. yeuk!

Lincs, I don't use chemicals if at all possible, too many birds and, of course, Megan to think of! Lavender won't grow in that area, tried it before and it's not happy there. : o (

Its available in most garden centres ,Shirley..I have used it for a few years now..and it does work..I know you can make your own,but I have never tried..Its not cheap,,about £5 last time I got some..but it lasts a long time, and you just spray when needed..

Thanks, Sandra, I'll look out for it later in the week. Sent you a message, hope you haven't turned in for the night yet . . . .

Garden pests....I really hope the soapy water application helps until you can sort out getting the garlic spray...it sounds like that will go a long way to solving the problem of your "visitors"....and I hope the ladybugs come back again to help you out :)

17 May, 2011

Nope...still here,Shirley...going...NOW.! :o)

17 May, 2011

Hi Shirley tulip. sorry to hear about your little visitors.when i get them on my roses the ants have a good feed.

17 May, 2011

Well, it's now 8am and we have a grey sky with actual drizzle falling! Perhaps that'll move the bugs off ... will keep spraying the Roses with soapy water though.

18 May, 2011

Wont be long now for us all to get the dreaded green, black, brown fly Shirley, im watchinh my Lillies at the min, the Buds were infested last year, I didnt notice untill i bent down to take a pic :) Soapy water works and as spritz said, gloves.. Its the slugs with me, one of my hostas is full of holes grrrrrr..and i use pellet, tried everything else with no success...

18 May, 2011

I have never seen them before, but found some yesterday on my rose buds. So I do not think you are mad, and the pictures are proof. They probably will respond to the same chemical and non-chemical treatments as green and blackfly.

18 May, 2011

Ydd, I've almost given up with Lilies, one has been nibbled down to almost nothing and the remaining one will be targeted next! Slugs hate bran, so if you have some leftover cereal, scatter that around the Hostas. : o )

I'll try that garlic spray, Bloomer recommended it earlier Alex, as I'm reluctant to use chemicals in the garden. Hope your Aphids can be controlled before too long . . .

Oh no, now she is telling us she has a money tree growing in the garden, !!!!! o.k. soapy water should do it, good luck, let us know if you get rid of them,

18 May, 2011

Ughhhhhhhhh hope you can get rid of them, Golden Showers is such a lovely rose, just been out to check mine and they are clear, but we have had rain every day

18 May, 2011

If only I did have a money tree, Yorkshire, especially after the quote we've just had for Home/Contents insurance! I've donned my glove and removed the bugs . . . : o ))

Now I'm making people check their Roses, Pp! I just wish those Ladybirds hadn't vanished. : o (

18 May, 2011

get some more quotes Shirley, glad you removed your bugs, I sent Michael a PM today, hey, I have not seen any ladybirds yet,

18 May, 2011

hope you get rid of all your bugs.... im hoping the ladybirds will keep my roses safe.....

18 May, 2011

I'm sorry to see that there's a new pest on the block - especially as the numbers of ladybirds seem to be less - certainly in my garden anyway. Mind you I suppose there aren't enough flowering plants in it just yet.

18 May, 2011

Golly, haven't seen these brown bugs before. Thank you for blogging about them .... I clicked 'like this blog' because I think you've done an excellent job of bringing our attention to these little critters.

18 May, 2011

Yorkshire, Michael is not allowed on the Growmore/Growswell/ Grow your own site as he calls it, so I shall reply on his behalf ... lol!

Holly, the Ladybirds have mysteriously vanished .. : o ((

Great description "new pest on the block" Mariek! : o )

Xela, I hope you never get to see them on your plants!

18 May, 2011

Fascinating blog ....

I shall be looking for 20 pence pieces under all my roses ;o)

18 May, 2011

Lol, I knew I shouldn't have used a coin . . .

18 May, 2011

Next time, £2 coins would be better, please ... Lol...

18 May, 2011

If I set a 20p coin in some compost perhaps it would grow up into one . . . lol!

18 May, 2011

Lol... worth a try ... £££££££

18 May, 2011

: o )))))

18 May, 2011

I've never heard of such things. I hope you can get rid of them.

19 May, 2011

Like you Shirley no rain again, I don't like the look of your aphids, will go and check our roses, thanks for alerting us to another garden pest, always something isn't there?

19 May, 2011

Hywel, just when I thought the garden was full of Ladybirds! No sign of them at all, just these 'nasties'! : o (

Dd, it's no laughing matter now, the water butts are empty, but there are some plants that really do need a soak now and then. Rain forecast is for Sunday. Those 'Brownfly' are a new one to me, they've been disposed of now! : o )

19 May, 2011

They keep saying rain is coming but nothing happens....as long as it stays away on the 29th lol

19 May, 2011

Fingers crossed . . . for lots of rain up until the 27th ... then two dry days! : o ))
